Children's health

Neurology consultant has phoned to request DD come in for an urgent MRI - worried!

DD (15) has been having pretty severe migraines over the past year or so. Last week we had an appointment with a neurology consultant at the children's hospital she seemed satisfied that DD was on the correct course of treatment now (with a minor tweak) and gave a formal diagnosis of severe migraine with aura and also tension headaches.

Today I got a phone call at work from the consultant we saw last week to say she had been discussing DDs case with a more senior colleague and they wanted to bring her in soon for an MRI as there was 'something in her auras that they are concerned about'

Was actually feeling really reassured after her appointment but now feeling really worried. Googling to try and find out which of her symptoms might be causing concern. Obviously now I've totally scared myself too.

The rational part of me is trying to be sensible and that it's better for everything to be checked thoroughly. The other part of me is panicked.

Realise there's nothing I can actually do, but just feeling really worried now Sad

Yo Hope this week goes fast for you and the results are good.

DD had a migraine on Saturday, at the very first moment of visual disturbance she took a sumitripan tablet and it totally knocked on the migraine on the head. she didn't get a far as taking the pain killers she didn't need to. She was gob smacked and really pleased that she swerved any pain. Fingers crossed this works long term.

Hope everyone else is ok.

Just to say...if the MRI scan showed something really worrying, they wouldn't have let you leave the building! Doesn't prove that it's normal, but the big scaries they get in touch v quick.

Oh wow Lucjam, that's great that the tablets worked! Did they make her feel really sleepy, or was she ok? I feel they made DD so tired, but apart from that did nothing.

Great if they work for your DD, good news! Smile

Thanks Nocool, I am trying to think that way too, each day that passes without a phone call, i am taking to be good news! But good to hear someone else say it too! Smile

I am really struggling with the waiting (and it has only been since Sunday!!) I have never been the most patient and this is tough!

DD has had to take the sumatripan twice since she got it. It works brilliantly however she gets very tight throat when she takes it. Does anyone else suffer from this. I have read that it can be a side effect but DD was making out that it was an alergic reaction.

Think it will be back to the GP for us!

Oh not so good about the tight throat, pity when it works so well. I wonder if the nasal spray version would help with that? Although maybe not, as i suppose it would be the same active ingredient. Hope you can get something else that works equally as well.

I came home from work last night to a missed call on the home phone from an NHS number, that doesn't accept incoming calls (I tried to phone it back, even although it was after 6!) so i will try phoning the hospital today and see if I can get any results. Annoying as I gave them my mobile number at the time. But hopefully I will know more by the end of today.

I phoned and the consultant is at a conference until Tuesday so no one can give me the results until then. I was told to phone back Tuesday afternoon if I hadn't heard by then.

More waiting!! Although at least now I know I won't hear anything until Tuesday I can stop checking my phone every 10 mins! Smile

Hoping no news is good news!!

Have been thinking of you, since reading this last week. I'd take no news as good news too. The Consultant wouldn't let it hang if it was terrible news, conference or not.

Thank you LilRedWG Flowers

Hopefully today will be the day! I will wait until 2 o clockish and if I haven't heard by then I will phone up.

DD has been exhausted recently. Coming home from school, falling asleep then falling into bed exhausted again. I think this is side effects of the Proplanolol. It is frustrating as she has had some stuff to do for her exams last week and this week, that count towards her final mark and she hasn't been able to put in as much time as she normally would.

Her actual exams are in May, so not that far away, but I am unsure about asking for her dosage to be changed, as the migraines are actually under control for just now, and during a bad spell she would be actually unable to sit an exam, so I think the tiredness is better than that.

He last exam is 24th May and we have a consultant appointment that week, so will ask about it then (if she can last that long). Feel so bad for her just now, as I know she is really frustrated with herself Sad

Thanks both.

Still no news! Tried to phone yesterday and today, but the consultant is unavailable and he is the only person who can tell me the results. getting really annoyed now!

A 2 min phone call really would just put our minds at rest!

Maybe tomorrow! Hmm

Oh that is crazy! Can you be very firm with the secretary and insist he calls you. I always assume that no news is good news in these types of situation. You're more patient than me!

Report
YoScience · 16/03/2016 20:25

I'm really not patient at all. I nearly lost it with the secretary yesterday, she was quite rude. But said she had emailed the consultant with my number to call me. Today all calls were going straight to voicemail (I did wonder if they were screening my calls! Paranoia setting in) Wink

Might ask XP to try tomorrow just in case!!

TheFairyCaravan your ds1 has the symptoms of mitochondrial disease (combo of migraine and cyclical vomiting is how we got ds' mito disease diagnosed). Please google Dr. Richard Boles and his research on mitochondrial disease and treatment (cocktail of supplements with little to no side effects and much more effective and less toxic than the traditional migraine medications). Websites with great information about mitochondrial disease are //www.mitoaction.org and //www.umdf.org
For everyone else including the OP, this may be relevant to your child too!

Finally hear back today! Grin

Brain and blood vessels and everything all normal! I am so relieved!! I got the call in the middle of a meeting at work and then informed the whole room of practical strangers that my daughters brain scan was clear! (I was on a bit of a high, but also felt like it would explain why I interrupted the meeting for a call! Wink)

We discussed the side effects of her tablets, but have decided to keep with them until her review in a few months as that will see her through her exams.

It has been the longest 3 weeks ever! Thank you everyone Flowers
