Anyone up i am really worried

Dd is 6. Past 4 weeks she has had a bad cough but no fever. Dr originally prescribed steriod nasal spray but after a week of no improvement and cough worse than ever switched to amoxiciilin. Just finished course today. Seemed initially better but today cough worse again and fever too. Cough does't appear to be on chest but in throat. Fever tonight hit 39.7 and vomited just after calpol. Alternating nurofen and calpol, but still finding if hard to keep her comfortable. Called 111. Told to give more nurofen 4 hours after last dose as brought back calpol. Temp an hour after dose still 39. Told me to wait until morning. Very worried.

With that temperature I think I would go to A and E now. Thinking of you OP. Dont hesitate, just go.

Has she vomitted again? I would take her to a and e as well. You won't be able to sleep for worry and that's a very high temp.

As others have said- A&E. They'd rather see you over nothing than tell you they wish you'd have gone sooner

If she has been ill for a while a sudden dangerous deterioration seems unlikely ?I'm a bit rusty as mine are grown up but as far as I can recall a high temp in a six year old isnt as dangerous as it would be in a baby .You could try damp (not freezing) cloth on her forehead to cool her down? Hopefully someone with proper medical knowledge will reply

Things always seem worse at night. If your instinct tells you something is really wrong I'd get her to A and E if you can

A&E. The chest thing getting better but then worse would warrant investigation. Temp nudging 40 and vomiting suggests you need help.

Make sure she is stripped off to vest and knickers, no sheet until her temperature reduces. Window open slightly to cool room.

What is her breathing rate over 1 minute? (Should be 20-25 breaths per minute) And her heart rate? (Should be 80-120 beats per minute)

Is there any drawing in between or under the ribs or tugging in of the skin in the notch at the base of her throat when breathing? Are there any sounds when she breathes in or out?

Does she seem confused, delirious or very drowsy and unresponsive?

Any rash? Or light sensitivity?

Have a look down her throat with a torch while she says ahhh, are her tonsils enlarged and very red? Can you see a gap between them?

She has woken and temp now 38.6. She has sipped some water and has been trying to work some maths out in her head. Said she feels hot and has kicked sheet off so I take it nurofen has started to work. Will sit up all night and check on her. If she doesn't cool down anymore will take her but its a 40 minute drive. If her temperature has come down and she is talking coherently then that is a good sign.

Try to encourage her to drink some more if you can.

You do not need to stay up all night. If I were you I would set alarms to give the next doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol. You could always set up a makeshift bed in her room if really worried.

Even if she is settled overnight and her temperature reduces with ibuprofen and paracetamol I would still take her to an emergency appointment in the morning just in case as it sounds bacterial not viral and she may need further antibiotics.

Sounds as though she'll be Ok at least until you can get her back to Gp OP. she's obviously lucid .
But yes I 'd be watching her all night too.Or at least dozing next to her . Sleeping with you would probably over -heat her.
I had a cough that lasted 5 months a couple of years ago The only thing that cleared it was steroids but of course they hate giving them ,especially to a child I would think. Dr said it was a case of infammation refusing to clear even when the original cause (bacterial or viral) had been dealt with or cured itself. I had a chest xray and everything
I'm assuming she's been vacinated against whooping cough ? .

Thank you. I'm a terrible worrier so have popped her in my bed and I am perched at the foot of bed looking like a mad woman. Yes she seems fairly coherent at the moment but you are right I will insist she sees a GP in the morning. I think it's going to be a long night. Just worried I won't be a to control her temp in the mean time

It is horrible when they are like that and the night lasts forever.

Can you make a bed on the floor next to her? Sofa cushions or camp bed or something like that? If you can doze between checks, you'll be in a better state to care for her tomorrow.

OP, it's so hard. Please try to get some sleep, you need to take care of yourself to look after her properly. Go with your gut if things take a turn for the worse during the night, doctors have always assured me they'd rather parents be cautious rather than risk leaving things to deteriorate. Hope she feels better soon.

Quick update. Seemed more poorly so ended up taking her to A and e. temp sitting at 39 2 hours after calpol. Given her another dose of Nurofen here but may give a suppository of paracetamol poor love. Consultant thinks viral. How can they tell its not bacterial? I keep thinking its her adenoids but consultant shrugged and said there is no way of checking. Feeling a bit dispondent.

Are you still in a and e ? Have they moved you up to a ward ?

She's in the best place OP = very worrying I know but likely she is just having trouble shaking off the virus. Keep updating pls xx

Did they do a CRP check? (finger prick blood test) that's how they usually get an idea of whether something is viral or more likely to be bacterial (high levels indicate more likely to be bacterial)

No still in a bay of a and e. only done temp and blood pressure check and consultant listened to chest. Do think I could ask for CPR test? Never heard of one ?

Been making a throat clearing cough constantly. Dr said throat looked clear. I have questioned adenoids in the past as it would tie in with constant cough and poor sleep. Worth taking her our GP later?

No harm in asking. Its standard procedure here (Finland) to do a CRP test.
