As the title really.
My almost 5 year old DD has left discharge on her underwear. It doesn't smell, but is a brownish colour - at first we thought it was poo, but (sorry TMI) it doesn't smell pooey, not much smell at all, a definite 'vaginal' smell iyswim (similar to my own)
Her underwear was crusty with it, but her genitals seem clean & not red or irritated or anything. She hasn't been scratching or complaining of itchy/painful bits either.
She sometimes gets a sore stomach before she needs to poo or pass gas tho.
Should I make an appt for the Dr, or just wait and see? Dr Google was both useless & terrifying.

I think I would start off with making sure her number is properly clean after she's been to the toilet. maybe buy some of those wet wipes toilet paper things. if she is wiping back to front it would explain the colour.

if she has it after that then I would make the appointment just to check there is no infection etc.

brown discharge is usually what I get when I'm due on my period. (sorry for tmi ), is her body developing normally? no sign of maturity that's a bit early on?

I definitely think you should get her checked. It is not normal for 5yr old's to get vaginal discharge.

Thank you all for replying. she is showing no signs of early puberty at all.
I think I will make a Drs appt for a checkup just in case.
I suspect the problem is toilet related - she does not like help, unless she does a poo. I don't think (despite repeated telling) she is wiping properly.

My DD had a couple of episodes of this at a similar age. It was a vaginal infection caused by wiping back to front. Sorted by antibiotics and constant reminders of which way to wipe!

I would see your GP to rule out a urinary infection, but also Thrush and possibly infection caused by germs arising from the bottom and poo, that are easily spread to the urethra and cause an infection.

Hopefully, this will be easy and quick to sort out.

I had this with dd2 recently because she likes to be independent, but isn't always wiping properly.

I took a urine sample in just in case of uti, but it was diagnosed as thrush. Some clotrimazole cream cleared it up.
