Glaucoma - 11 Year Old

DS2 had a routine eye test today; last one was 18 months ago. Today the optician found some glaucoma and will be referring us to a specialist. From my basic research just now it seems that childhood glaucoma is usually picked up before 2 years of age. I'm obviously a bit worried. Has anyone else got experience of this please? TIA.

This must have been a shock Flowers The good news is that Glaucoma in older children caught early is very treatable....first they will try eye drops in all likelyhood and then if they don't work, some surgery.

He will need check ups ongoing but it's very treatable these days.

It's actually not glaucoma (DH got it wrong - he was in with youngest DC and I was in with eldest). It's actually a cataract.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm still anxious about it of course :(

I've just had a look at the NHS page about developmental cataracts...which is what they're called when they develop in children and it's actually less scary than Glaucoma.

Obviously it is STILL scary....but the risks are far fewer and though an operation might be needed, it also might not...depending on how bad the cataract is, some children only need monitoring....then no OP is needed.

If an op is needed, it's usually simple to perform. I don't suppose they'll keep you waiting long for the appointment and in the meantime...be chilled...it's not as bad as Glaucoma.xxx

Thanks so much. You read the same info as me. We have private health too so hopefully we will be seen very quickly. I appreciate your response and doing research xx
