10 months and tiny

Hi everyone, my lb is 10 months old and he's about the same size as his little buddies who are 6.5 months old! He's not skinny so I haven't been worried but have just weighed him and he's only on the 2nd centile on the growth chart. He eats well and never keeps still-I'm chasing him around while writing this! He BFs just first and last thing now and won't drink anything but water through the day. I'm 5ft 1.5 and DH is 5ft 7 so I've just put it down to genetics but should I be worried? Thanks

My daughter always followed the 2nd gentile and has always been in smaller size clothing...she is now 12.
Both you and your DH are smaller than average, so I would think that is the reason why he is smaller.
All health professionals I spoke to about my daughter were never concerned unless she dropped off the centile she was following.

It's all genetics. My kids have always been on the 2nd percentile. I'm little and DH is only 5'7 so we are not going to produce monsters!
Although my DS is 8 and finally is in clothes the right age but still needs elastic pull in waists!!!

Thanks that's reassuring! Was she little when she was born though? DS was 7lb 15oz and pretty much followed the 50th centile for the first 3 months before he's dropped off it

I don't have experience of little babies, but if I were you I would be trying to get more formula or breastmilk in. Can you offer boob more? I would be putting formula on appropriate meals as well. The milk is so important at this age. Also chat to health visitor.

Totally agree sometimes! I bought my sister age 13 PJs for Christmas as the kids ones were so nice (she's 26!) And cheap trainers-bonus!

If your boy has crossed two centile lines on the growth chart (which it sounds like he has) then you should discuss it with your health visitor or GP.

It's fine to follow the 2nd centile, it's not fine to drop across lines. Hopefully they will be able to check him over and reassure you.

GoodStuff that's what I was wondering. He totally refuses formula but I'm worried about increasing BFs as I work 2 days a week and worried he'll not like the disruption to his routine when I'm at work. He has a big bowl of porridge in a morning with whole milk and loves it. I know it's no cows milk til 12 mo but is it ok if it's boiled? Thinking I might have to visit health visitor

Hi Nutty, my daughter is nearly 10 months and only 15lb. I used to worry loads when she was younger but she is so active and bright and alert so I think she's just going to be dinky! I kinda like it though, plus I'm getting excellent wear out of her clothes! She still fits most of her 3-6 clothes!

And to add, she was born on the 50th and dropped to between 2nd and 9th - HV went nuts!

Well that's what I worry that HV is going to overreact! He didn't feed properly when he was born but the midwife was so sensible about it whereas I don't have a lot of confidence in our HVs so tend to avoid them! DS is 17 1/2 lb and has only just outgrown his 3-6 month clothes so we're in the same boat needy. He's been crawling and standing since 6 months so I think a lot of the centile crossing is due to being more active?

I wouldn't worry about him feeling like his routine is being disrupted. I would offer loads of boob 5 days a week. It might take a week for your supply to increase. Does he refuse a bottle? If so try formula in a cup. I would swap the cows milk for formula as well. That'll give him an extra 3 to 4 oz just on his cereal. Don't give water, all milk.

How tall is he? Weight on its on is pretty irrelevant it's now not matches up to his height that's important. So if he's topping the centiles for height but scraping the bottom for weight it would be a concern but if he's at the bottom for both then I wouldn't worry.

GoodStuff he used to scream at DH all day when I first went back to work (1 day a week) and refused formula, expressed BM, bottles, feeder cups, everything! That's what makes me nervous about reintroducing BFs. I think it's the smell that put him off but I haven't tried it for a month or so, so I'll give it another try in a beaker as he's a pro at drinking water now lloyd I haven't had him measured recently but he looks short compared to other babies. He's got a pretty chubby tummy on him! Think I will take him to GP or HV at least to get some official measurements. Thanks everyone!
