Patches v operation

DD is 5 and bee using patches for about 18 months which has helped her enormously for a squint. They said they use them until eye sight no longer improving and this has stopped now but told to keep using the patches. Her squint is still v noticeable but haven't mention corrective surgery which my brother and nephew have had at a much younger age. When do they do surgery? I don't really want her to have to undergo this but worry about the teasing etc. Is there a cut off age? Should I mention it?

The patch is not just to improve a squint but to improve the sight in the eye that is not patched. Dd had squint surgery at age 4 but that was after her sight had improved through the patching treatment. Her squint was also still noticeable while wearing her glasses so we got the surgery done to improve the cosmetic look of her eyes.

Does she wear glasses too?

No harm in asking when you next see them though.

I am in my 40's but was under children s hospital for a squint obviously many years ago..

I had op when I was 7... Obviously I am well out of date with treatments but although my eyes are not completely straight so glad my mum decided to get me the op

Hi OP (orthoptist here)the patch is only to improve the vision it does not treat the squint. If she wears glasses and still has a noticeable squint with them on then that is something that can be corrected surgically. There is no time limit for squint surgery it will depend on the type of squint. When you have her next appointment ask them about surgery.
