constipated baby... suggestions

We started DS on baby rice on Tuesday. Next day i noticed he was really straining so decided to hold off on giving him anything else. He is breast fed on demand. Since Wednesday morning he's been straining like mad. Crying. Raising knees to stomach. Going bright red in the face. Everytime he latches he comes off after 2 mins going bright red in the face, like he's trying to go to the toilet. He is till passing 'wet' poo, they are smelly, green and abit mucussy. We took him the doctors yesterday he gave us an appointment with the nurse. She said she couldn't feel any 'blockages' She said no medication but advised water. We have done this, belly massage, warm bath, legs in cycling motions, diluted prune juice.. You name it.

Im at my wits end. He's in agony and nothing seems to be helping.

I would take him back to the Dr

GloGirl · 14/11/2015 21:24

Why do you think he's constipated, if he is having wet green poos maybe he has cleared his bowel?

Wet and green is typically diarrhea which might account for his upset and straining and regular poos. He could have a tummy bug or be teething.

Stop with the prune juice and go back to GP on Monday if he's still got an upset tummy.

Did you make the baby rice with EBM, or with formula?

3sugarsplease · 15/11/2015 06:36

Glogirl technically he can still be constipated. As the 'wet' poo can push around the hard poo if that makes sense.

I went back to the doctor yesterday. Who decided he has reflux... I queried why this would come on after such a long period of time and his answer was he didn't know. He is still straining like mad so bad it's waking him up.

He's been up since 12 straining, going for a wet poo and then continuing to straining after.

How old is your ds?

redcaryellowcar · 15/11/2015 07:11

How old is he? I think you need to revisit GP, maybe see someone else? In other ideas... I'd suggest starting weaning no earlier than they can sit up and poke broccoli in their own mouths, for dc1 that was 7m, dc2 was 5 1/2 m, I tasted baby rice and wasn't keen. I used to steam sticks of carrots, courgettes, broccoli pear, Apple etc but purée of fruit and veg would work equally well.

He's 18 weeks ( before I get any stick for this...) I was told to do this by our GP. Our baby feeds so much on demand that it was taking its toll on my body. He told us to give him some rice mixed with ebm so that way I could have a small break. Now after this i would rather it takes it toll on me than see him in pain.

My DD had horrendous constipation when she went on anti reflux milk, but you could actually see the poo trying to come out. Have you checked to see if you can see anything?
I'd just stop the rice and try puréed fruit tbh, and some water with a bit of juice in.

brimmond2 · 15/11/2015 08:56

Plenty of puréed fruit & veg. Stop the rice. Movicol is great but not sure how old they have to be. Sunsweet prune juice is good stuff. Plenty of warm water, not cold... Hope your poor son gets some relief soon, so not nice seeing them in pain, v stressful for you. Try the above & if nothing works go back to GP ASAP.

Please read the attached link :

If the gp has ruled out constipation and your child is opening his bowels, I really wouldn't worry Biscuit

3sugarsplease · 15/11/2015 20:33

Thank you for the advice.. Today has been a day from hell. Pretty much continuous crying since the early hours. I noticed a small amount of blood in his nappy earlier today. (Very very small amount)

Nothing has seemed to help. He crying is like fustration and pain. He also has no interest in feeding at all. As silly as this sounds.. I've attached a picture. He's being doing this with his legs all day.

How stressful! My son suffered constipation as soon as I weaned him. Probiotic sorted him out. Also I avoided starchy foods like rice or bananas.

You can get infant glycerol suppositories from the pharmacy though my sister said they can be reluctant to hand them over. Dr Sears gives good run down on how to use. But they are temporary fix. However this is what I needed to do as a one off to get my son going again. The probiotic maintained.

I know it's hard with the constant breastfeeding. My son fed at least once an hour during the day! For nearly a year. Solids made very little difference for us. The calories of early weaning foods are so low.

Onsera3 · 15/11/2015 20:44

The green mucous poo could be because he is coming off the breast all the time maybe? So is getting too much sugary foremilk.

knaffedoff · 15/11/2015 23:29

Suppositories on a 4 m old Sad

MythologicalPersonage · 15/11/2015 23:49

I would cut out the baby rice and see if it improves. His digestive system probably isn't mature enough for it yet. I hope that your little one is feeling better.
