Circumcision

Hi, I posted a few days ago about my little one having club feet.
Well the same little one (9 weeks old) has been circumcised today...I understand some people don't agree with it, but it is personal choice...I'm just wondering if anyone who's little boys have had this done have any advice on handling the discomfort??
My older son had the procedure last year (he was 7 weeks old) and he was alright but my little one seems to be unsettled which is understandable. I used savlon and Vaseline with my older son but just wondering if there is anything else I can do or use. TIA x

Well I just thought since he caused me so much pain when he made his way into the world that I would return the favour!........what kind of question is that?! Like I would ever want him to be in pain?! I asked for advice on helping him be comfortable which thankfully over night he's been great. I can't help that you seem to disagree with circumcision, that's your prerogative but don't ever insinuate that I would want my child in pain because that's just not true and is very hurtful. X

If you didn't want to cause your child pain you shouldn't have got him circumcised for a non medical reason. I'm sorry you don't agree with that but that is the bottom line. Circumcision is unnecessary except where there is clear medical need.

I hope your little one is feeling better soon and I hope any negative comments you receive make you think twice for any future children.

Did he have the plastibell method? If so the doc advised us to not put anything on it at first just to bathe every day (after first day) in warm bath - to help the ring fall off. Then after a week or so when it's healed apply Vaseline to prevent anything from sticking! If he's in discomfort give him some calpol - smallest dose. Obviously if he's really unsettled for longer (inconsolable ) then you would need to seek medical help because as you have experience with your first son it usually doesn't bother them to that extent there may be something amiss - I'm not saying that to scare you just to be aware!

The plastibell will drop off when the dead skin dries out. I think putting Vaseline on it might prolong the process. Just keep it clean so it doesn't get infected.

Agree if he is really in pain call the doctor.

OP to people who would never contemplate this you do have to accept that it seems to us you have deliberately caused unnecessary pain to your los. That's just how it is.
I've seen you post before and you don't have any religious reasons for circumcision either it seems. So very hard to understand.
I do hope he's passed a peaceful night and would echo getting some advice if he continues to be upset today.

On the whole I try to sit on my hands rather than post on threads where I really disagree with the OP's actions but I'm afraid this one has really hit a nerve. My DS had to have a hypospadias repair at age three and this thread has given me flashbacks to him screaming with pain in the middle of the night and the nurse having to page the on-call paediatrician to get morphine prescribed. I know it's too late for OP's son but if there are any lurkers out there wondering whether mindlessly following family tradition and circuncising your son for no medical reason is a good idea - no it bloody well isn't.

OP - for heavens sake, if your son is in a lot of pain take him to the doctor to check the procedure has been done properly, isn't infected and to get him adequate painkillers. And for god's sake if you have another son do not subject him to this.

But you obviously do- why else would you cut off bits of his body? Any other cosmetic modifications you would like to try? Cut off a few fingers or a leg below the knee perhaps?

Etak15 and Stix he did have the plastibell method like my other son. He has been fine over night. Thank you both for your advice I really appreciate it.
To everyone else, I understand that not everyone agrees with the procedure, and I'm sorry to the lady who's son had to have a correction, I really hope he's ok. But nowhere in my post did I say my son was in pain, I said discomfort. He wasn't screaming in pain or anything like that, if he was I wouldn't be writing on here I would have taken him to see someone. I wanted advice so that nothing was rubbing anywhere it shouldn't and if there was any cream that anyone, who's child has had this done, had tried and had worked. X

Your poor boy. I cannot believe this is not illegal in the uk. It is so barbaric.

These a lot of threads about this child mutilation at the moment. I wonder why?

Legally speaking, how do they actually explain it not being assault? Could a child ask for prosecution where this had been done for non-medical reasons?

I recently caused a stir by asking at a safeguarding conference why FGM was classified as abuse but circumcision was not. It is so awful - makes me so angry that parents are allowed to hurt their boys in this way.

My poor ds1 is 9

He has had repeated infections from age 2 and we have been trying to avoid circumcision ever since but it's become evident he needs the procedure and he is terrified
I'd do anything for him not to have to have it done and I can't understand why someone would do it without medical reason

I will never ever understand this. I hope your ds is ok today and not in too much pain. I would urge people to not do this to their children, honestly cannot fathom how you can.

Thanks greenwalls he is having to see a psychologist as he's so scared of the procedure

He's had so many infections that scar tissue has caused a big problem. They tried creams to help but it didn't work then the consultant said to wait and see as we really wanted to avoid it but it's got worse

Were you told that you don't seem to understand what FGM entails? How it has no benefits whatsoever and blights the lives of 100% it's inflicted on (quite probably its intended effect)?

Hope it isn't as bad as he thinks. And also that it sorts things out for him.

I would say it's the same as docking a puppy's tail or cropping it's ears for aesthetic reasons though. And we have outlawed that.

FGM is NOT the same as circumcision. Surely anyone with half a brain can understand that.

I hope so. He's so scared. I'm worried that all the scar tissue will cause a problem with the procedure but he has a great consultant so fingers crossed it will go as well as possible.
I'll stop derailing the thread now. Thanks for the reassurance/support. I'm feeling rotten about it all
