My DS aged 8 had one dilated eye last Wednesday. I noticed it when we were eating with grandparent, he had had ice cream. I thought it might be ice cream brain freeze which he does get. My FIL is a retired consultant and checked his eyes advising me to visit the GP if it happened again. It did happen again the next day so I took him to the GP on Friday. I saw a frankly, dismissive and a little rude I thought (he was smirking openly at me) young GP who sent us away saying it was very unusual, maybe I should see an optician. I said it wasn't his eye itself that was the worry as this could indicate a neurological or nerve problem. He said he couldn't say but wouldn't refer us to a specialist.
We saw the optician the next day who was very thorough and professional. He looked at the back of the eye and saw no damage or anything which worried him immediately however he said it was very unusual and has referred us to be seen at hospital within two weeks. I understand from nurse friends this is standard if it there are no signs or something severe, bleeding etc. He has had no bang to the head but does have a head cold and is bunged up.
My FIL has been in touch a lot and has now suggested I just turn up at A&E demanding to see a paediatric neurologist. He has never given medical advice before despite his long experience, nothing serious has ever come up before. Because he is so unflappable it has made me so worried now. I was going to wait to see what the hospital say but now I am worried I am putting my son at risk waiting.
I know I can't seek medical advice on here - I seem to have a lot of that around me! I suppose I would like some sensible mum words, what would you do? Thank you in advance.
