How long should croup last? Also, if your kids have had it, can you describe how the symptoms played out?

DS (nearly 3) had it a few weeks ago; I had to call 999 because he couldn't breathe. He had steroids in A&E which seemed to sort him out, and the symptoms improved rapidly after that. It was gone in a few days.
