Potential broken bone

My child is ten and may have broken their finger. I clearly can't diagnose this, nor can 111 over the phone, but I have no idea who I would take them to see. Local hospital isn't taking any A&E, second hospital won't even allow children in out of hours, 3rd hospital is a long way away and while I am happy to go there I would prefer to know if the right thing to do. I'm also wondering if out of hours GP services is a possibility. Can anyone advise please? DC has has calpol, warm bath and an ice pack. Was given ice pack when happened and we collected an hour later. I would have gone immediately if called.

111 can't diagnose over the phone but they can get you an appointment for OOH. (At least ours can, might be worth a try?)

You need to go to take them to an a&e that could x ray it, I think you will have to go to the 3rd one although seems weird that the first two won't see them!

Is there a minor injuries unit at the hospital? They don't do much for broken fingers except maybe splint it to a neighbouring one

shushpenfold · 11/10/2015 18:34

MInor injuries unit tomorrow or A&E now. Your dc needs an X-ray to make sure that's it's a simple break and doesn't require further intervention such as surgery to re-set.

I just don't want to over react but equally I'm not a doctor. Poor thing does look sorry for themselves.

I think there is minor injuries at the nearest one who isn't accepting any ambulances but I would drive. It's all changed so I'm confused where to go. Even ooh has changed locations.

Agree get it x rayed, broken bones can cause nerve damage or if the bone is not aligned.

AuntieStella · 11/10/2015 18:45

You need to go to the nearest place with X-Ray.

It simply can't be diagnosed without that. So, although hospital 2 sounds as if it needs shooting, hospital 3 is your best bet. But go prepared for a frustrating wait, and steeled against the possibility you will get patched up tonight and an appointment for tomorrow.

Thanks everyone. I found a minor injuries unit 20 minutes away and called them. I took DC in, two X-rays and they are now sporting a bandaged up two fingers. Says not broken but will be reassessed so bandaged up just in case. Bandage on for three days.

Thank you everyone for your advice FlowersWine
