Helping 6 yr old take a tablet

Hi

DD is 6, rising 7, and has been prescribed medication for an overactive bladder. It's a small tablet once a day. Apparently there is a suspension but it isn't quite so effective.

Trouble is the poor love is trying like a trooper but is finding it incredibly difficult to swallow the pill. We've tried food, water, everything but after 15 attempts it is still sitting there on her tongue Sad On most days we eventually get it down but it's no fun for her.

Would you admit defeat and ask for the suspension, or are there any tricks you can suggest? I have never had trouble with pills myself, nor has DS, so at a bit of a loss.

Hi op, Been there too with my ds, is the medication oxybutynin? We had it in liquid form for a short while, did help the symptoms but was taken off it due to side effects.

Try dd taking a smartie tablet to practice. Make sure the mouth is wet and try placing a smartie on the very back of the tongue and then try to swallow. We found there was less wrenching with the smarties and helped to overcome the gagging.

Once it can be done with a smartie move on to the tablet.

Hth.

Thanks. It is indeed.

I'll try practising with smarties, she would at least enjoy that Smile

Put it in a spoon of yoghurt, she can then swallow that down and probably won't notice the tablet.

We tried that with ice cream this morning ... quite a lot of ice cream consumed but not the sodding tablet!

Maybe yoghurt is worth a try as less melt able. She doesn't like ordinary yoghurt, loves the chocolate flavoured ones which are generally verboten - but maybe any port in a storm Smile

Is it one that can be crushed? They can't all be. I would go and talk to your pharmacist.
