Bloody diarrhoea 6/yo

Frecklesandspecs · 28/09/2015 08:52

My daughter started getting tummy pains nd diarrhoea about 6 days ago.
I put it down to a common tummy bug.
Yesterday she started getting some blood in it and overnight more.
I've got an appointment with Dr this pm but now worried because of the blood and no let up.
Anyone experienced this please?
Also will I need a stool sample?

I don't know if they have a policy of informing you, and I don't know the current procedures in England, but mostly in developed countries there are regional or national registries to keep track of these types of diseases, and especially the ST/VT E Colis because they can cause a lot of harm and their exposure risks need to be managed / they are major public health issues.

It might be devolved to county labs when or how it's reported to an ongoing database.

Your concern is just getting her better, hopefully, and you don't need to worry about it otherwise. Others have already talked about the main risk factors to avoid it in future. Keep really clean in the house in meantime (hand washing!) because it does circulate between people, too, and the incubation period can be up to a 8 days I think.

E. coli definitely gets reported in the UK. If the lab gets a positive result they should will immediately notify the GP and public health. Public Health England will then be all over you like a rash for a day or two trying to work out where it came from and make sure she isn't passing it onto anyone else. You will know if it turns out to be that.

But as ljkk says, your main focus right now is ensuring she gets better and stays better. Hope you have an improved weekend!

Glad she seems to be ok!!!

A week on since put sample in.
Tang surgery yesterday, they said result was back but Dr hadn't checked it yet and to ring back today.
Just rang again and it's still not been seen.

GRrr! Chase it up tomorrow. But I would hope that if it was something nasty like E. coli you'd have heard back well inside a week.

Hope she is better in herself now?

She is better bob thanks (apart her asthma which is not great ATM, but otherwise tummy wise no diarrhoea. Still says middle of tummy still sore quite a lot but certainly not like before when in obvious pain.
I shall let you lovely people know when I eventually get them!
