Neck Spasm in 12 Year Old

DD1 has had a terrible pain in her neck for about 3 weeks. This is accompanied by what she describes as the worst headache she has ever felt in the back of her head. She has really restricted ability to twist her head in either direction or move it forward or back.

We think we can trace this back to us going lane swimming every day for a week in the holidays as she was nervous about swimming lessons at school. She's not brilliant at swimming so holds her head very awkwardly when doing breaststroke/front crawl etc.

We finally went to the doctor last Thursday who said it was a neck spasm and recommended ibuprofen gel and Calpol 6+ and heat. We have been doing this since (was doing Calpol before we went to see doc) but even with a maximum 20ml dose three times a day she is still in real pain.

Am I justified going back to doctor tonight to see what better painkiller they can give or do we just have to wait it out? She is supposed to have PE for the next 2 days at school that will involve a 3 mile cross country run on one day and more swimming the next. School generally ignores parent's letters and makes the children do the activity anyway so DD is petrified and says she can't think how she is going to manage the pain. Should I ask for a doctor's note?

what do you think about a chiropractor in case it's the part of the spine that goes up to the skull being out of place? does an osteopath also look after this?

Thanks for the suggestion. I see an osteopath for my back so I was thinking he might be able to help DD.

Just back from GP - saw a much more helpful one than last week. He showed DD some gentle movements to try to get her neck moving so we''ll try that and then resort to osteopath if necessary. I have £100 of annual physio/osteo cover for DD so wouldn't cost.

Doctor wrote a note banning PE for 2 weeks, so will review then.
