DS, age six, has a small swelling/ lump around his right cheekbone, it has been there several weeks & I don't think it is changing. It is soft/ moveable and painless. Our GP has diagnosed a lipoma but I am concerned because Dr Google has told me these are rare in children, & on the face. Dr Google has instead suggested the possibility of a soft tissue sarcoma (rhabdosarcoma or something spelt a bit like that...) I have asked for a second opinion and we are going back to see another GP in a couple of weeks. In the meantime I am going into anxiety-overload. I would be very grateful for any experience or advise.

One of my friend's DS had something similar but it was after being bitten by another child. A month after the incident, there was no marks anymore on the skin, but under you could feel the lump. It continued growing for weeks and they did several scans to be sure of what it was and measure it. It stopped growing at around 1cm
The GP told my friend, the only way to remove will be surgically.

Did your son have a lesion on the face, even weeks ago? A scratch, an insect bite?

It could be a dermoid cyst, these are totally harmless and don't usualky need to be removed unless they encroach on the eye/orbit.

Thank you both, the doc seemed fairly sure it wasn't a cyst. He hasn't had a recent injury....

A dermoid cyst comes from when the embryo forms in the womb, not after injury.
