Toddler with barking cough - asthma?

My littlest has woken up with a sore sounding cough, he hasn't a temperature or a cold really - might it be a sign of asthma? I can't recall what I have read about it.

Eldest had mild asthma when he was about this age and ds3 has just started having cow's milk so I don't know if I ought to stop giving him that.

Thanks.

Why asthma? Isn't it more likely that he has a cough?

How little?

SophiePendragon · 18/07/2015 08:31

He's 2 and a half. Yes of course it might just be a cough but it seems to be at night and first thing in the morning, and he doesn't have a cold, and it's reminded me of ds1 being diagnosed with asthma when he was the same age due to a cough without other symptoms.

That went on for weeks though.
He has no fever or other symptoms and none of us has a cold or cough which struck me as unusual.

Both me and my one year old have coughs at the moment. There was no cold first. Just a bit of a runny nose that started after the cough.

Ah Ok. Thanks - I will just keep an eye on him and if it goes on and on I'll take him to the doc. Hope you are both better soon.

Sounds like it could be croup. Does it sound like a seal/sea lion? If so it is croup. Keep a close eye and if he is struggling to breathe get down to A & E.

Thank you Bun, he had something like that in the winter, it was a bad chest infection/pneumonia? not sure which as they didn't say but he was nearly admitted to hospital.

The cough is the same but he had an awful temperature with it that time. He seems fairly well in himself today.

I will keep a close eye though, and if he starts to struggle will take him to be seen.

How is he this evening?

SophiePendragon · 19/07/2015 07:33

Bun, thank you for asking - he seems Ok, the cough has dwindled and he hasn't coughed at all this morning or during the night.

Bit weird. I wonder if it might be to do with pollen and so on.

We had similar and found a humidifier really helped.
