He's 28 months, weighs 3st, I'm not sure how tall he is but I'm 5ft10 and he's up to my hip, size 9 feet if that's relevant.. Is he fat and I'm not seeing it or is he ok..? His 27 month assessments next week. (Missed the original appointment as he was sick, the new appointment was the only date they could fit him in. Thanks

My DD currently checks as 94th percentile on the BMI - one off the 95/obese where she used to be. She is anything but obese. She is slender, her legs are not chubby, her 'baby tummy' is gone, she does not have fat arms or a fat face. She is not 'overweight' as the BMI categorises her. She is under the care of 3 different hospital specialists, one of whom monitors her weight/height every 6 months so when I say she is not obese, I know the medical professionals agree with me - it is not just me being blinkered. So I expect if it can be wrong for one child it can be wrong for others too! Personally I think the BMI for children is not that useful as it clearly can suggest children have a weight problem when they do not.

I've just got DS old red book out.

According to his centile height and weight chart at 26 months he was 100 cm tall and weighed 17kg.

So not much less than your DS.

Despite being very average birthweight he grew very quickly. Was below 50th centile at birth but at 1 had gone up to the top end 99.6th.

But it all evened out and he is now 6 foot tall and about 72 kg at 17.

I am tall ish at 5'9" and his dad 6'2".
