Ds in constant pain

9 week old Ds has started to be in pain after every feed which is a lot as he will only take 1oz every hour (has been this way since birth) he has also had diarrhoea since last Wednesday after every feed .

Saw GP last Thursday and told him this but he said he has no concerns as Ds is gaining weight well & if I have any concerns I'm to contact my Health Visitor which I have done & I'm seeing her tomorrow .

I have had problems with Ds , up until last week I thought he had either reflux or a milk allergy as he has been in a lot of pain & tends to bring his feeds up but will swallow it back down iyswim , he has also been like this since birth but the GP won't take me seriously as Ds is gaining weight, the Gp has decided he has Colic & has put Ds on Gaviscon & Dentinox , Despite me telling h that he has no trouble with wind (burps & trumps for England)

My HV has tried to help but she hasn't a clue about Allergies or Reflux even though she has been a HV for over 20 years

I don't know where else to turn , I can't let Ds be in constant pain all the time just because they don't have a clue , I'm hoping to see a different HV tomorrow as I requested to , what can I do/say to ensure I get help for my Ds ??

Can you see a different GP? My DS has reflux and a dairy allergy and was on prescription milk free formula. However it was a battle to get it as I found some GPs just didn't take it seriously. I also got the line about putting on weight and 'he'll grow out of it'. He did, aged 2. But that's two years of a miserable child which isn't acceptable.

You need to start being firm, you're not happy and it's not acceptable to leave a 9 week old in this state. Gaviscon can help but can make them constipated as it thickens everything. We found ranitidine really great. See a different GP and a different HV, and don't give up. It might be worth posting on the allergy boards here. In the end we paid for a private consultant's appointment which was the best money we spent, and went back to the GP who referred us on to the NHS allergy team.

He is the only GP at my Surgery unfortunately , Ds has gotten worse so just about to ring NHS Direct and go to the hospital

Glad you're off to hospital. Hopefully it's nothing but always best to check. My DD was like this. Awful for the first 3 months ago then suddenly settled down. Had investigations, and nothing was ever found.

Got sent to the urgent care centre first where the GP told us that it is completely normal for a 9 week old to have diarrhea for this long and told me to go home so I made a fuss and am now waiting in A&E to be seen by a paediatric doctor .
As I were leaving the GPs room he made a point of telly me that he only referred me to a&e as I'm a young hysterical mum and he had to tick a box

I'm been treat like an idiot by the Paed now , they are insisting it must be a viral bug but if that's the case why hasn't he been ' Ill ' or even had a temperature ?
I have been checking his temp everyday since the diarrhea started and it hasn't once been even slightly raised

A hysterical young mum? how bloody rude and patronising. I would complain OP. As a hcp myself, that is totally unprofessional.

I'm sorry you've been treated like this. So the paed just thinks it a bug, did you suggest an allergy?

I finally saw the Paed in charge & she was astounded that my GP had let my Ds be in pain and feed like he does for so long , he was admitted and they are trying him on a lacto free milk so they can rule out wether he has a milk allergy or not and if he doesn't they will try him on anti reflux milk.

They have been trying to feed train him but he is having none of it and sticking with his 1oz an hour

I hope things get better for you and your little one, OP. I don't know if they've explained but a lactose intolerance is different from a dairy intolerance. Lactose intolerance in babies is very rare. A dairy allergy is an allergy to the milk protein itself. There are various formulas, some which are called hydrolysed formulas where the protein is broken down (such as aptamil pepti or nutramigen), as it's meant to be easier to digest but in some cases (as with my DS) that doesn't work so you have to have an amino acid based formula which is totally dairy free such as Neocate or nutramigen AA. We had Neocate.

Sometimes you can have a temporary lactose intolerance after a bug. Anti reflux milk isn't much different from gaviscon, it will just thicken everything. Have they not tried ranitidine or omeprazole? They are the next step after gaviscon which you've already tried.

Glad you have got somewhere - my first had severe silent reflux & milk allergy & picked up on reflux meds & Nutrimegen, number 2 - had to have Neocate as Nutrimegen still effected him -

It is a long old process, but you sound like you are doing a great job as your babies advocate

It's not temporary as he has been terrible for feeding since birth .

He has been put on C&G Pepti milk & the diarrhoea stopped straight away & I'd bet anything that if he were given some of his previous formula that it would go straight through him .
He is still in hospital though as they want to get to the bottom of why he screams constantly & is so unsettled , so looks like I'm in for the long haul with the hospital stay .

On the upside he is taking 4oz every 2& a half hours which is more than he has ever taken , the nurses are 're training him with his feeding which is something I tried several times and failed miserably so it must be something to do with the milk

He is a million times better thanks to the Pepti Milk & the Ranitidine , Its like having a different baby
