Heart murmur

I know I have already posted on this but now have a bit more information from GP. Ds (aged 8)had a heart murmur picked this week in hospital. He has had lots of different problems over the last year or so ( thankfully nothing serious) that has needed to be checked by hospital drs and this has never been picked up before. His murmur has been described as soft systolic. We are now waiting for an appointment with a cardiologist but don't know how long this will take. Trying not to panic but can anyone tell me what soft systolic means as trying to stay away from google. Also had a dental gum abcess a few months ago that has now resolved. Could this have anything to do with it?

DS had a heart murmur discovered after a bout of illness when he was 3, we were referred for appointments and scans but it was found to be innocent. We were told that murmurs can sometimes show up after illness and often disappear of their own accord as silently as they arrive. If they are not rushing an appointment through I would take it as a good sign.

Soft systolic refers to a grading system used to classify heart mummers.

DS has small hole in his heart (VSD) and has a grade 3 systolic mummer but is completely well and just requires monitoring every three years.

I know how worrying it is. Cardiology appointments tend to come through very quickly (under two weeks) here so hopefully you won't have a long wait.
