Poop question

My 2 and a half year old is gluten and lactose free (trial diet). He is extremely constipated, has passed a little bit of poo the past 2-3 days. Very hard and brown/maroon coloured.. if you break it up there is no red/maroon in it. Hasn't eaten red foods.

I'm waiting for out of hours but call back waiting list is 3 hours.

Advice would be appreciated.

He needs lots of fluids and try to get him to eat fruit. Strawberries, kiwi and mango all good. Be wary of too much fibre like weetabix without lots and lots of fluid as it will just absorb the fluid the body needs to help pass the poo out. Will he eat dried apricots? A warm bath helps and get him to pretend he's blowing bubbles as it helps you poo.
I think you can get lactulose from chemist over the counter which may help. Good luck, hopes he goes soon

Being constipated results in dark coloured poo. It just means that it's old and dry and has been sitting in the gut for too long. I'd recommend Lactulose because he probably needs help to clear the backlog.

He is on lactulose :/ The maroon is blood though obviously, I assume?

Not necessarily. Hard to say unless you get a sample tested.

If Lactulose isn't working then you need Movicol, which is much more effective.

My ds poo changes colour all the time and can be maroon and is down to food they eat. Ds had a stoma for a while and it came out all different colours and I couldn't relate it to what he'd eatem. Darker and smellier the poo often is that it's older like previous poster said and just a sign of constipation.
