ENT want my dc in urgently

Why would they want to see them so soon?

Short version is dc has one tonsil which is huge and incredibly red. They're not unwell other than finding it hard to swallow and having some earache

They havent responded to medication so are on a very strong antibiotic instead and if this doesn't work they want us to ring the ENT ward to fast track to a consultant. If it reduces slightly in size then it's healing and we will be followed up in normal clinic. Either way, they're worried enough to want to see them

It's just a tonsil. Should I be more concerned?

Could they be concerned in case it ruptured?

ggirl · 19/03/2015 22:56

well it's very near the airway so worth being quite concerned if its very enlarged

Don't know about risk of rupture can they rupture?

Yes the airway would my concern if it were both but it's only one so the airway isn't obstructed in anyway

It's possible to get an abscess on the tonsil called quinsy. If that happens it can swell large enough to block the airway, and an operation might be needed to drain the abscess. Hopefully the antibiotic will help prevent this.

GTW has it. They are being proactive to avoid an emergency.

Oh crap. :-( I wish they'd explain these things to you and not just give half a story!

Thank you
