Morning cough since November

Hi ya

DS2 (3) has had a cough since November.. he's had various types of cough between November and now. ie: constant during the day like a 'normal' virus and he's had a chest infection in that time.
But every morning he has a cough, he also has a runny nose..so cough is obviously caused by lying down at night mixed with the runny nose. He has disturbed sleep..but doesn't cough in the night..just sounds very gurgled in his throat from the mucus. It's been noticed before that he has large tonsils (he doesn't have sleep apnoea..my eldest did so i know what to keep an eye out for)

He also has created a habit of a hucking noise, like the noise when someone is about to huck up phlegm and spit (not the nicest of noises!)

We've been back and forward to the Doctor as he's had various temps, the chest infection and a couple of ear infections.
But obviously "it's viral", when it comes to the cough.

It only clicked this morning, could it be an allergy? my husband has allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma. I don't think it's asthma as he's not coughing at night and doesn't sound wheezy.

I've got him an appointment for 10 days time, but just wanted other views or if anyone has experienced similar.

Thanks :)
