12 day old with gunky conjunctivitis?

My poor little dd2 has a gunky eye. It was filled with green slime this morning, and I'm wiping away yellow gunk every half hour now.

Google doesn't help (suggests STI causes), and has scared the life out of me!

I've been wiping with cool boiled water and a weak saline solution. It seems to be much better than it was in the early hours of this morning.

Do I need to take her to the doctors for a swab test?

Breast milk should clear it if you're able to express some?

Speak to HV. Could be a blocked tear duct, probably nothing serious. If you're bfing you could use some bm to clear.

monkeyfacegrace · 18/03/2015 11:34

I don't have any breast milk, she is ff.

Have called HV but no answer, will try again in a bit.

Usually I'm very relaxed about stuff like this, but a Google of neonate conjunctivitis will put the frighteners up anybody!

It's really common and nothing to worry about. HV should be able to help. In the meantime try not to srress

My DD has just had his (with the added scare of being a prem) spoke to 111 who advised wiping with cooled boiled water and it'll clear itself up, don't be surprised if she gets it in the other eye as obv you can't explain to them to to rub eyes/wash hands.

DDs lasted 3/4 days in the first eye and around a week in the 2nd

DD had this - sometimes the tearducts don't fully open until they are older. She was a couple of months old before it fully cleared up.

Brilliant, thanks.

I did tell DH that if the cause was chlamydia or gonnerhea (sp?), then he has some explaining to do Grin
