Ongoing problems with orthodontist

My son (who is 9) is having treatment to correct an overbite and lack of space issues. He has what I believe is a removable palate expander - basically a removable appliance designed to widen his palate and push the front teeth forward. We have had no end of trouble with it. The front brackets which hold it in place keep getting bent out of shape and we have to go back for a readjustment after 1 or two weeks of wear. This is his second appliance now (which we've had to pay for) and the same issue has occurred again after just two weeks.

The orthodontist seems completely stumped by this and has no suggestions other than to say that he must be fiddling with it to have this happen. We have talked to him about it and he says he isn't doing anything. I haven't noticed him doing anything untoward with it either. He is very careful with taking it in and out. She has now said that we may need to leave him until he is 11 or 12 since this is not working. I am not particularly keen on this because if his bite is bad enough to deem NHS treatment then surely it should not just be left to sort out later on!?

Has anyone had similar issues? I am considering going to another orthodontist for a second opinion since we seem to have reached a total impasse with this one.

Thanks,

Leaving them a while isn't so bad, I'm glad the decision with DS was to leave it a bit. DS grew enough that he didn't need loads of teeth removing that we were told he would need out, but were unable to remove originally when orthodontist wanted. So leaving to sort out later was excellent.

I can understand why you still want 2nd opinion, I think that would cost £100 around here to get privately.
