enamel hypoplasia

i thought i would start a new thread regarding this condition. i have a 9 year old son who has this condition, and im still devastated after 2 years. we have had private treatment, reduced his sugar intake, yet his teeth are still decaying. he now has to have 4 teeth taken out in hope his new teeth wont be affected. we were told by my dentist we couldnt do anything about the appearence but we are having a filling over the front two teeth. i will let you know how we go. please share your stories. i would have loved to have had something like this when i first found out. i am also interested to find out why... i dont believe it is just one of them things. what do all our babies have in common. my ds had chicken pox at 5 months, he was put on soya milk as a baby, i took sanatogen vitamins in pregnancy. please share yours...maybe there is a link. i look forward to speaking with others x

ds doesn't have good enamel on his first adult molars - he had chicken pox when he was 5/6months old too

theres a few other things i forgot to mention. ds come out in little raised clear water type blisters around 18 months..
i also had an amnio test in pregnancy with him.

My twins both have this. Still waiting to see if the adult teeth are affected. I had food poisoning at 12 weeks, repeated steroid shots, they were premature and the one whose teeth are the most affected had major surgery at 3 weeks old.

DS1 (6) has/had this on his molars and one incisor. He had large amount of antibiotics at 5 mths and during his first year had at least 10 weeks of antibiotics. He also had gastroenteritis at 16 weeks (his first year was not easy!)

DS2 (3) has perfect teeth and had far more in terms of juice/sweets that DS1.

I have finally come to terms with it and although I still blame myself (as it can be prevented from causing issues with excellent dental care). The long wait for referral added to our problems. We booked a private dentist in the end, who charged us for initial appointment then transferred us back to NHS, the result was a 5 mth wait was reduced to a week!

DS2 has this. 4 teeth out under GA aged 4 after a few infections. Now may need a brace.

His teeth had holes within days if coming through.

I had AB late in pg for a skin infection and Gp B strep and he had lots of antibiotics as a baby for kidney problems. BF until nearly 3.
No soy milk. Had severe reflux so vomited 20+ times per day. Didn't eat food until he was 1. :(

He doesn't like sweets or fizzy drinks. His brother who does has perfect teeth.

isnt it weird how they dont eat sweets and they still decay. im still a little abnoyedcat the consultant who stated it was definately sugar related and make you feel like a bad parent x fourarms...are you saying your sons adults teeth come through with holes in x

Sorry no - his baby teeth had holes within days. Adult teeth seem OK touch wood!

My dd1 had this. No chicken pox but I had campylobacter food poisoning in mid-pregnancy. Dd1 was BF for four months and afterwards was on soya formula for dairy allergy, also had repeated antibiotics for constant ear infections. Also had reflux as a baby. Her adult teeth came in fine and have never caused her any trouble.

Dd2 had none of the above problems and her baby teeth were fine. However, she has white/brown marks over her front adult teeth .

awe basket ofshells...its aweful isnt it...we are seeing a speicalist about have composit filling placed over the teeth x abx seem to be the problem here. did anyone have an amnio in pregnancy

Both my DCs have this. DC1 has just been told he will need his molars removed because they are severely affected - though they havent decayed yet, they are very sensitive and so uncomfortable. Its only his adult teeth affected, his milk teeth were perfect. DC2, its hard to say how bad his will be since he doesnt have many adult teeth yet. But the signs are there with the ones that have come through. I think I may be affected too, my front teeth are all streaked with yellow/brown (I have therefore had them veneered for cosmetic reasons.)

I think my own mum felt it was because of anti biotics she took when pregnant with me. With my 2 there are no obvious possible causes that they share. DC1 was premature and is/was allergy prone. DC2 was straight forward and still is.All very strange.

My ds has this ithink, he is three.

I had antibiotics in pregnancy, he was premature and needed antibiotics as well. He also had cmp intolerance so had neocate then moved onto soya milk. Al his teeth looked mottled and chipped where the enamel is missing and he has a couple of holes in his molars.

Can't get him to see the dentist as he screams so we are brushing lots and hoping the holes don't get worse

Hi all, DD has just been diagnosed with this, apparently a couple of her molars are so decayed that they are beyond saving.

I just feel terrible for her. DH speaking to dentist again later as I am not sure I really took in what she was saying, but I have a few questions:

is there anything I should do differently?
dentist is saying wait and see, should I get a 2nd opinion? Not sure how far I trust her

Sure I will have more after DH speaks to dentist again later.

And yes - I had antibiotics in pregnancy, DD was prem and had antiobiotics at birth, and she had chicken pox at 8 months and was on soya after that for about 5 months, as she developed a milk intolerance after the pox.

God I am SO glad I found this thread.

hi ohgood... its aweful at first how old is she...iv now got jaime in a private dentist. it sounds like they dont really know much to be honest. im going to set up a private facebook group if anyone is interested. x il let you know the name on here x

My 8 year old DD was told last week she had this. We have been battling with cavities (since she was 4), changing diet, she has always been good with brushing etc. specialist looked into her mouth and said she has missing/no enamel. I really wish all the previous dentists might have seen this, would have given us a much better picture of what we were facing.

So she has to have 3 teeth removed, possible crowns and they will seal the others later this month. I couldn't ask the type of questions I wanted as DD was there listening. I am glad we have some sort of diagnosis, and realise we are going to have to be even more vigilant as we go forward with regard to sugar etc. I am gutted for her if I am honest (grateful it is not life threatening) but I know this is going to bring frequent visits to dentist and treatment.

At the moment she has only lost about 4 of her baby teeth so have no idea of effect on her new teeth, but the dentist (worryinly) said that the new front tooth pushing through looked "rigded". Wish I could have taken in more as she spoke but it was difficult trying to be light for DD and trying to take it all in.

Thank you for this post, I could really do with some support and sharing of stories, what is done etc.

I should add that when my DD was born due to some complications with the birth, she was put on antibiotics for the first 3 days of her life

So glad I've found you all. Both the DCs have this. DS (10) has it badly on two of his adult molars - he has pretty much no enamel on them. He's got to have them removed, and also the opposite molars to allow his other teeth to come in and fill the gaps. DD (7) has it mildly so far.

The guilt is hideous. They've never had huge amounts of sweets but did eat raisins etc as DD had bad constipation. They only drink water or milk except if at a party.

I get very jealous of the children who eat sweets, drink juice etc yet have perfect teeth!
The dentist told me it was probably antibiotics they had when babies. I wouldn't mind but both times the antibiotics were given as a precaution and I was assured there would be no side effects - ho hum.

Glad I'm not alone, but sorry it's happened to our children

Ds1 had a full set of milk teeth but has about 8 adult teeth. He is under the care of the hospital. He is going to get some implants. Can your dcs get implants to replace lost teeth on the nhs?
