calprotectin borderline in Dd1(4)

Posted before, daughter has had a few episodes of blood in her poo. Inflammation in stool test come back as borderline. 52 I think. I know mine was 105 and consultant said they don't worry unless over 150 so wondered if this is the same for kids? X

Hi mandmsmummy. Sorry I can't find my paperwork to give you the exact numbers we had been given. My dd's calprotectin test was slightly raised too. My dd is 13 but pretty sure her Calprotectin level was in the seventies (written as slightly raised on this doctors letter here) but believe I was told average was in the fifties for children. I can't believe I have not written the levels down somewhere! I was concerned, but her pead was not concerned unless it was in the hundreds apparently but our dd is older than yours. I think they will repeat the test again for us if she continues with her problems though.

I must add though, we have had no blood in bowel movements. My dd has been suffering bad stomach pains for over a year

Gp have yet to refer but I'm hoping they will now. She's had three episodes of blood over 10 months, and a bit of bloating but only once and she does have a pot belly. That's it really. Her poos are massive normally but on movicol now x

Thanks for the link, interesting. Doesn't look like a worry then. I do wonder if she has ibs? I do but wasn't sure how common it is in young kids x

Very interesting.

Just had 'phone call about DD age 9.
Her Calprotectin is over 350.
She has constant diarrhoea mixed with constipation but no blood (she has a colostomy and there is always lumps with the liquid) The colostomy is needed as she has a recto-vaginal fistula.

She also has a rare chromosome disorder and is immune deficient requiring weekly infusions.

She is due to have multiple scopes.

Does this ring any bells? TIA

Dd was on Omeprazole medication, anyone know if it would raise it by much been on ppi?

We are currently awaiting a pediatrician appointment regarding dd's upper abdo pains as she had a really bad flare up just after posting on your thread! Missed a whole week of school. However, I have been less concerned about the raised Calprotectin since reading 'Omeprazole/ppi's can significantly raise levels of Calprotectin'.
Currently dd has been told, via doctor, to stay on a bland diet until she sees her pediatrician again and to stay on the Omeprazole.
Things have settled down a lot, thank goodness
Hopefully an appointment wont take too long.... how is your dd? x

She's fine at the mo, we have an appt in a few weeks so fingers crossed.

Thought I'd give you an update.
We saw a consultant who's not concerned. Said the calprotecton levels need to be way higher than they are for them to be concerned. (Can't remember what now though)
Felt her tummy and said to monitor. Mentioned ibs and wheat intolerance but said to see how we get on. Carry on with movicol.
How's your little one?
My dd has a drip of brown water sometimes when she does a poo. Is that just wee mixed with poo? Or coming out of her? X

Hi mandmsmummy, I have been wondering how your app went! So pleased you don't have to worry about your dd's calprotectin level. At least they have given her a check over too but it is a slow process getting anywhere isn't it - same situation here.
Our dd has been up and down again. We had our hospital appointment and had a good chat to the pediatrician. It has been decided to take dd off the omeprazole to repeat the calprotectin stool sample again after four weeks. Just to make sure it was the omeprazole causing the higher reading - he is sure it will drop back down to normal. We have had her off the medication now for aprox two and a half weeks so getting there slowly. I don't know where we go from there but will see what the results come back as and see. I think porridge has been upsetting her system too recently so going to cut that out. But it is difficult to pin point the culprits...
Your consultant mentioned wheat then, has your dd got any other allergies/intolerances?

I don't know about that drip of brown water you mention, it could very well be wee mixed with poo.
Food diaries are very helpful if she were to get more increased/frequent symptoms. Could help to pin point certain foods. We do a food diary every day

You're right, it is slow going.
My daughter doesn't have any other allergies I know of.
She complains of achy joints, has eczema on her arms and still complains of tummy ache on and off.
I'm not happy that I can't help her and am debating writing to my doctor just so I can get everything said. I'm frustrated with them at the mo.

I understand completely. I have not been terribly happy with regards to our situation either.
Our dd has always suffered with her joints too. Had eczema bad when younger. But she has got quite a few allergies. Dust, pollen,life threatening peanut allergy and many other foods that show up positive on skin prick tests. Some she manages to eat and others she can't.
Yes, I would definitely get some things down on paper for your doctor or consultant, it can't do any harm. I often find the consultation never goes quite how you hope and it's a good way of giving them any info you may have forgotten - let alone it helping you to voice your concerns.
Our consultant wants me to update him on dd so I will be doing the same soon, trouble is our dd at the moment is up and down like a yo yo.
Some days I am ready to rush her to A and E with the pain and then other times like now we have had 3 good days in a row.
