Cough/cold for 6 weeks + after croup?

DS 2.5 caught croup right after having a vaccine, previously was very healthy bounced back usually within 24 hours of any sickness,

Croup was severe enough to be hospitalised and need steroids,

Is it normal for the cough/cold to last so long? Any ideas on how I can shift it?

I'm wondering if it may have triggered asthma or allergies? The Dr said his chest was clear though and I assume if asthma it wouldn't be?

He's vaccinated against whooping cough but I'm wondering if it's possible due to how long it's going on for? (Relative still caught it despite the jab)

Croup is a complication of a cold virus and under 5s are particularly susceptible. They also catch many colds in first few years, as they meet viruses for the first time. It all sounds pretty normal.
