Feeling terrible discovered DS has a huge hole in a tooth

Brushed my 8 year old teeth tonight and he complained that one of his teeth towards the back was sore. Looked at his mouth in the light and to my horror noticed that the whole side of the tooth looks decayed. I thought to start with that it was food that had got caught but after calling DH to inspect we are convinced its a large hole. Feeling so terrible especially because we have missed a dentist appointment as he was very poorly and in hospital. It must be over a year since he last went. We clean his teeth twice a day, he doesn't eat sweets or drink squash etc. He is a terrible teeth grinder at night and the dentist has acknowledged that his teeth are showing signs of wear because of it. Should I just wait until Monday to try and see a dentist or should I try and get an emergency dentist tomorrow? Will they need to remove it ? If so can they do it without a general?

My four (now 5) year old dd needed a filling last year. I was really, really upset. Then the other day I had a similar thing to you- was brushing her teeth and thought she had food stuck in between two back teeth. Nope, pretty sure it's another hole.

She brushes twice a day, doesn't eat much sugar, only drinks water (water-only started after her first filling, I'm convinced it was drinking diluted juice every day that did it). She went to the dentist in Jan and nothing spotted. I am mystified and frustrated, but trying to tell myself that some people have teeth more prone to such things. I have friends who let their kids skip teeth-brushing for whole days, eat sweets and drink sugary drinks every day etc, and their teeth are fine.

In terms of your DS, I would say that it can wait until Monday unless he is in pain.

I feel for you. It's tough.
