Low sodium newborn

Dd. had a low sodium level in her blood last week (127) and was admitted to hospital then put on a salt supplement for two days. Second blood test showed that levels had returned to normal range and sodium supplement stopped. Went today to have levels checked and they are now at 132 which is once again below average range. Doctors have given us no other information other than that she will need more regular blood tests and that they will call in the morning to make a plan of action. Has anybody else ever had this? And what could it be a sign of? Me and DH are now sitting here absolutely sh**ing it that it's going to be really bad news!

No advice but wish you both well

How did she ended up getting blood tested at such a young age? Did she have any symptoms? DS had this but at a slightly older age, was prem but they thought it might have been something to do with a kidney issue he had, follow up blood tests were clear. Other causes IIRC are tummy bug (unlikely for yours), thyroid, prolonged poor feeding/vomiting. Any of these ring a bell?

She had a small amount of blood in her vomit last Monday so we called go and they suggested going to children's a and e to get her double checked. A and e doctor didn't expect to find anything wrong with her blood results but ran them to double check blood was nothing to worry about and the results showed low sodium, they ran the test again as thought it was probably an error, results remained low so they admitted her overnight for observations, urine sample came back clear, they then prescribed a sodium supplement which she had for two days and then her results were normal, went back yesterday and they have lowered again. She doesn't seem to be ill atall behaving normally normal nappy changes etc.

How are you feeding her? Does she bring back a lot of milk?

DueInFebruary · 05/03/2015 11:07

She's formula fed and brings up a small amount but nothing excessive

Hmmm, I know they said if Ds got lower he would need to be admitted so the fact that yours hasn't been admitted is very positive.

Just checking you are using standard formula and yours has been feeding okay? All ok with birth and nothing on any scans antenatally?

DueInFebruary · 05/03/2015 11:54

She was admitted last Monday for 24 hours, then discharged with the sodium supplement.

Birth was normal, using cow and gate formula and all scans were normal.

Have you asked the doctors what they are concerned about? Or what low sodium can point to?

juniorcakeoff · 05/03/2015 20:05

I guess it is strange that they have lowered again, otherwise it might just be one of those weird things on blood results like my son, also DH was treated for something similar as a newborn which came up on a blood test.

The important thing is that whatever it may be has been found without your little one actually feeling/being unwell. I hope there are answers soon or at the next blood test there are no issues.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 05/03/2015 22:00

Doctors literally won't tell us anything other than they need to redo bloods to check sodium, won't say what it could be they said they are worried about them lowering more as it could cause seizures

Amybabygypsyqueen · 05/03/2015 23:00

Daft question but are you making the formula right? Not to watery? 127 isn't excessively low, it may regulate its self in time

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 05/03/2015 23:01

She has the premixed bottles at the moment as they recommend using that until four weeks old x it's at 132 now but was 138 last Thursday
