UTI - trimethoprim

We went to the out of hours Monday night and told dd has uti and prescribed trimethoprim for 3 days however she only has 1 tablet left and even though the pain has improved she is still struggling with having a toilet and some pain in her lower tummy.

is this normal that she is struggling, we only have one more tablet so worried this won't fix her.

Go back she may well need a different antibiotic. An increasing number of UTIs are resistant to Trimethoprim. Was a urine sample sent to the lab? This would tell the Dr exactly what antibiotic was needed.

If she still has the symptoms go back to the doctor and, if you can, take a urine sample so they can test it

I don't know if they sent off her urine sample, I will give our gp a call to take her back. Thank you

Trimethoprim is normally given for uncomplicated lower uti's so it's possible that the course just wasn't long enough or the inection has more than one organism and therefore might need an alternative antibiotic. Make sure they have sent a sample away to ensure that it is treated properly to avoid recurrent problems.
