16 month old, high temp, very sleepy

I've got a 16 month old who had a high temp yesterday that came down with calpol. The nanny had called 111 and they sent out a first response unit who came and stayed until they had seen the temp come down. She woke up with a temp of 39 this morning which has come down with calpol and stayed down at less than 37 but she has slept all morning and although rousable i can get her to open her eyes but she then goes straight back to sleep. The first response unit yesterday couldn't see an ear infection or a throat infection but I don't know how worried i should be about this sleepiness. She's usually a real live wire. Should I call doc or 111 again or should i just assume she's sleepy because she's not feeling well. What level of sleepy is too sleepy?

Trust your concerns and get her seen again with a doctor. It may simply be her fighting the infection wearing her out, but it can be hard to be sure when they are still quite young. Severe illness is pretty rare but it is very easy for the doctors to miss these few cases too - DD3 was sent home twice in 24hrs with "a virus" and landed up in intensive care fighting for her life later on day 2.

Fingers crossed she will rally soon and it will just be a blip for you and her. Good luck.

How is she?

Go and see a doctor if you can or take to A&e. Sounds like an infection

Been back and forward to the doc for the last few days because the temp just wouldn't stay down and stayed at 39 despite the calpol/nurofen. Frantically worried about her all week but she's better today thankfully. Looks like it was just a virus but she had us worried for a few days. Had to wake her to give her drugs during the night because otherwise her temp was shooting up to a dangerous level and she would then be too difficult to rouse. I hope she doesn't get ill like that again!
