Gp made me worry

Dd suffers with recurrent chest infections which she is on long term antibiotics for and also suffers with bad constipation, bloated tummy, fever, tennis ball size poo after 5/6 days. We saw Gp for this today (more medication) He said make sure we mention the bad constipation to the paediatrician when we see them in 2 weeks because there are certain illnesses you can have which can present them selves with having lung and bowel problems!!! Like what? I am trying not to google :/

Hello, what your gp is hoping to not rule out is probably cystic fibrosis

although the tummy problems associated with that are usually loose, oily, very smelly poos not constipation

try not to worry (easier said). ....CF is very unlikely if there is no history of it in your family, but worth getting it off the list of course

How old is your child? I know of one condition which affects lungs and digestion (although I don't think it would present in the way that you describe) but the NHS screens for it in newborns so if your child is under 7, you can rule it out.

He has been tested twice for CF and she has all the signs including poor weight gain/failure to thrive. They doctors were that sure the did the test again thinking it must have been wrong but second test came back ok too :/ yeah she is 2.6.

I think one of the conditions your go could be on about is cystic fibrosis.
My own eldest who is 14 had brittle asthma and also tummy problems.
He had to have a sweat test to check for cf which was clear.
Also had a lung biopsy, was quite scary at the time as he was on three nebulisers a day (more if his chest was extremely bad.
And also on steroids everyday for two years.
He is a lot better now, he still has asthma but it only flares up occasionly.

Did they do the sweat test? My DD was diagnosed with CF following the heel prick test so I am sadly familiar with this.

Op try not to worry. Cystic fibrosis is what they want your child checked for. The symptoms your child has aren't barn door typical so that's good, also as stated it is screened for.

However, in children like yours it is a very wise check to do. What is never well explained is that screening tests never can detect 100% of cases ( or be 100% certain that a positive screen means the illness is present - there will be further tests ). The number of cases missed by newborn screening is extremely small but not zero.

Yeah sweat tests. The dr's were convinced that was it, they have done a lung biopsy under GA which showed nothing, she had tests for reflux/aspiration etc. Would it just be CF he was suggesting or is there anything else it could be. You know when you get that niggling feeling something isn't quite right but you just don't know what!

Constipation is a problem in cf, only children with a pancreatic insufficiency have the loose, oily stools. (I say this from DS1's bedside in a specialist cf unit)

However 2 sweat tests won't have been wrong, especially with newborn screening as well.

I hope they find what's causing your DD's problems soon and give you a plan to make her better.
