Sever nappy rash & raw bottom

Dd (15m) has a horrible nappy rash. The whole family had flu/bug a fortnight ago. She seemed hit by it worse and her poos are still messy. She started with a nappy rash about 10-12 days ago and it started to blister Monday last week. The blisters split and a patch went raw. It showed signs of slight improvement by Thursday and stupidly I cancelled a GP appointment for it. But since then it's got massively worse. The raw area has grown and is a very angry red. She has spots over button too. Last week she didn't really show signs of discomfort but over the past few days she's visibly distressed and clingy. My mum took her to the doctor yesterday. They took and stool sample and gave benthapam and metanium. But I've got both these at home. I normally swear by metanium but it's making no improvements and dh things it's making it worse. I find benthapam impossible to apply.

She's at nursery today with cotton wool and both creams. I'd like to ring the doctor for something better to be prescribed does anyone know of if such a thing exists? or natural successful remedies. I did apply Vasaline once but wasn't sure that would help...??!!

Anything they give is going to take a few days to work. We used lansinoh as a physical barrier against wee/poo on the skin, lots of nappy free time. Have they checked if it could be thrush? If she is in pain a bit of calpol will ease her discomfort too.

When she gets back from nursery, let her have a nice long bath and let her have nappy free time with no cream on for as long as possible. It needs to be able to breathe and heal a bit. Poor thing.

My mum said dr didn't mention thrush. I did ask her to ask about thrush and possible temporary lactose intolerance following bug, but neither were picked up by dr....apparently. This is the problem asking someone else to take her but having been off for over a week ill myself and with poorly kids I just had to go to work!

We've been using metanium for almost a week already. Admittedly not as much nappy free time as we perhaps should have but nursery won't and we busy most of the weekend! I feel dreadful for her and terribly guilty for not taking her earlier!

Bath good idea could I add anything to sooth?

It certainly sounds like thrush from what you say about spots. My midwife recommended cannesten, the one in a red and white box when DS had it. You'll need something with anti fungal properties.

DS was pretty bad and the Dr prescribed Timodine, which has a steroid in it, we could only use it twice a day for 3 days.

Apparently natural yoghurt is soothing, but I was never sure if it should be applied during nappy free time or when he was wearing a nappy.

A couple for tablespoons of salt in a warm bath works a treat for nappy rash too. Stop using wipes/bath bubbles just plain water, if you need to wash hair do it at the end of the bath and rinse her off before drying and playing chase around the house nappy free!

might need to look into cause of rash / rawness, one of my babies had this and after a bad tummy bug had become lactose intolerant so her poos were acidic and burning her botty so it only cleared up once we stopped all dairy. we were able to re-introduce after about 6 months and giving pro-biotics to build up the good bacteria that had been killed off my the virus.

hope it is not that, but thought I would mention in case it is as I felt horribly guilty with all the time I gave for it to clear up which of course it didn't

Lex temporary lactose intolerance came to my mind. I can't explain why it just doesn't seem to be 'just' nappy rash. She's off her food too. What where the signs? Was the only way to diagnose to eliminate dairy ?

When DD had bad nappy rash, chamomile tea seemed to work best to clear it up - a couple of bags in her bath, and replacing wipes with cotton wool and (cooled) chamomile tea solution.

If it's infected you're going to need something like fucidine. It's an antibiotic with steroid. Cleared my DD bum up in two days.

up it was a few years ago now but I remember she was unusually fussy as must have been in gastro distress and beside herself with either wet or pooey nappy and more frequent poos some of which were whitish

If it is lacto then will need to remove the cause then solve secondary issue of thrush or infection as others have said with cortisone and anti fungals

When are the stool sample results due? Might be worth another trip to dr if not cleared up or improving within next day or so as in our case there was just no chance for skin to heal before it got irritated again and got infected, poor babe

Eliminating dairy gave signs of improvement within a few days, hth

Yes the nipple cream worked when sudacrem, bepanthen didnt, baths to keep area clean.
Could she be teething molars?
I would try going a day without the dairy and see if things improve.
