Just gone to bump the old one and noticed it was nearly full so time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who is dealing with an asthmatic (or possibly asthmatic) child who wants hand holding, advice or just somewhere to vent!

All welcome.

DS has just been diagnosed with his third chest infection since October. Thankfully he is back at his consultant in two weeks!

Hope your ds is okay mal and you too.

I wanted to pick the brains of you experienced lot about what to do: docs appt was helpful in that he agrees a preventer is the next thing to try, but he's given me a prescription for clenill (?) for one month only, after which he'll review and if no benefit take him off.

But I've read here that it can take 6 weeks for this stuff to get into their systems? And given ds has just gotten over a chest infection, he's highly unlikely to have another one in the next month. So we'd be putting steroids into his body for no reason, yes? So confused. Not really sure what we want now, and maybe putting up with illness and wheezing every 6-8 weeks is the least bad course of action? Any way of reducing susceptibility to chest infections themselves?

Sirzy · 14/04/2015 20:28

It will only be a low dose of steroids inhaled so well worth a try. Within 4 weeks there should be enough built up to be able to see a difference

Hi how is everybody doing? We have had a great couple of weeks but noticed yesterday dd was coming down with a cold, shes ended up being admitted with her last two colds Sad.

She woke me up during the night crying for her puffers and this morning can't speak a full sentence without a coughing fit!

Thought she might have a break now the weathers bit warmer as her blood tests show she's not allergic to pollen.

Sirzy · 19/04/2015 10:11

Hope she feels better quickly peppa.

DS has struggled the last few nights too. I know with him it's pollen though.

Don't forget it is possible to get false negatives on allergy blood tests so maybe worth trying antihistamine anyway.

Thanks sirzy, I tried her with a dose of piriton and shes had quite a good day so may have helped Smile

She's got a slight temp so keeping a close eye on her and hoping it doesn't go on her chest its her third birthday this week bless her.

Sirzy · 24/04/2015 14:34

Mal did you get the results for your ds?

How is everyone else doing?

OP posts:
PeppaIsACowbag · 02/05/2015 11:34

Hi how is everyone and dc's doing?

Dd just finishing another course of pred, her 8th course in 7 months. She has a follow up appointment with her GP this week as he thinks she needs her medication adjusting. Do you think I should ask for a referral? At what point did people ask and did anyone have any problem being referred?

Starting to dread the sight of a runny nose as every little cold in ending in a+e/gp visits and courses of pred.

PeppaIsACowbag · 12/05/2015 17:05

Anybody still about on this thread? Hope all dc are well.

I've had dd taken off montelukast as she started displaying side effects plus it wasn't helping she's had to have loads of pred since being on it. GP was really supportive and we have an emergency course of pred just in case.

Seeing how she goes for a month on just ventolin and flixotide then if she needs anything else looking at the preventer that has ventolin as well so just a waiting game now. Fingers crossed though she's been fine Smile

Sirzy · 12/05/2015 17:06

Hi peppals, hope your Dd copes ok without the singular.

DS is plodding on. Having a lot of trouble when walking but otherwise pretty controlled.

OP posts:
PeppaIsACowbag · 20/05/2015 18:54

Well DD started suffering without the montelukast, night cough has come back with a vengeance this week so GP has put her on a course of pred and seretide to see how she gets on with that.

Hopefully this will be it now and we can finally get her asthma under control! Hows everybody doing?

Sirzy · 20/05/2015 19:14

Seretide has been great for ds hopefully it helps your dd

Ds is plodding along at the moment

OP posts:
PeppaIsACowbag · 20/05/2015 19:55

Thanks Sirzy glad ds is doing OK.

PeppaIsACowbag · 22/05/2015 21:18

Think DD is getting chicken pox Sad

I've read that it can get affect children with asthma differently especially if they are on oral steroids, does anyone know or have any experience of this? Shes halfway through a course of pred.

Sirzy · 22/05/2015 21:34

Peppa, I would phone ooh for advice. It can be problematic so worth getting medical advice. Hope she is ok

PeppaIsACowbag · 22/05/2015 21:42

Thanks I'll ring them she seems fine but I've scared myself reading online! Will see what they say.

WellThatsLife · 12/09/2015 21:19

Here we go again, been fine all summer but just like the last four years come september she starts again. It always starts with severre hayfever type symptoms which makes me wonder if an allergy to a particulat type of spore or pollen is involved but rapidly progresses to affecting her chest Increased her setetide to max, she's also on loratidine, nasal spray, monteleukast and salbutamol so will just have to hope she improves

Maladicta · 12/09/2015 21:30

Sad Sorry to hear that, That'sLife Have they suggested doing blood tests or RAST testing?

We're chugging along at a course of pred a month, nothing else we can do, consultant reckons keeping him out of hospital is the aim, we just have to live with the steroids.

We're also waiting for an ENT referral - consultant reckons the headaches are down to his sinuses being gunked.

How's everyone else doing??

WellThatsLife · 12/09/2015 21:51

Hi Mal, they haven't that but we're seeing gp on friday(she's suffering from very heavy, 12 day long periods as well) and her consultant at the beginning of October so I'm going to mention them as there seems to be a definite pattern developing

Sirzy · 12/09/2015 21:54

DS is plodding on ok still on his cocktail of drugs but they seem to be holding him pretty steady.

He had a sleep study done last week to see what happens to his Sats overnight. From the numbers I saw they didn't go below 94 which is reassuring just got to wait for the appointment to get the proper results

PeppaIsACowbag · 24/09/2015 15:30

Hi how we all doing? DD been great all summer now its got a bit colder and we're on our first course of pred, here we go again...

WellThatsLife · 24/09/2015 19:20

Hi Peppa dd1 also on first course of pred and amox after several attacks over last 24-48 hrs, just hope it's a better winter than last year...

Maladicta · 01/10/2015 22:08

Ds is looking forward to having the nose spray rather than a flu jab this year. The surgery's putting on a special Saturday session for kids which is really great.
We're heading into another potential attack - throat awful with golfball glands but no wheeze yet. ENT was inconclusive on the headaches but he can barely more his eyes atm :(

Sirzy · 02/10/2015 17:45

Mal, am I right in thinking your ds has severe asthma? If so I hate to be the bearer of bad news have you checked he is ok with the nasal spray as ds isn't allowed it because of the severity of his asthma he has to have the jab

OP posts:
Maladicta · 02/10/2015 21:18

Oh that's interesting Sirzy, no ones said anything so I'll check.

Poor thing has an awful throat, barky cough and sore sinuses so just waiting until it hits his chest.

I can't give pred until he needs it so will have to wait- he's not wheezy yet but when it starts it's v hard to stop :(

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 08/10/2015 23:30

Hi can I join? My dc is doing trial and error with inhalers and hasn't got a formal diagnosis yet but tonight ended up on prednisone and amoxycillin for a wheeze and rattle on the chest following chest tightening and difficulty breathing that the blue inhaler wouldn't resolve

I'm looking for some advice and guidance basically! Thanks
