Just gone to bump the old one and noticed it was nearly full so time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who is dealing with an asthmatic (or possibly asthmatic) child who wants hand holding, advice or just somewhere to vent!

All welcome.

DS has just been diagnosed with his third chest infection since October. Thankfully he is back at his consultant in two weeks!

That's good mme, dd coughs so much (when she's bad) that she's sick. She's an asthma review in a few weeks so think I'll mention that

Sirzy · 28/03/2015 20:48

Pass, the preventer inhalers need to be used all the time to have an effect. They build up over time and take up to 6 weeks to be fully in the system

OP posts:
lollipoppi · 28/03/2015 22:05

Pass I was going to say the same as Sirzy, for the preventer to be effective it needs to be taken daily to be in her system, it's useless to take it just as and when it won't have any effect

Mme that's great news, DS is also on seritide and we've seen a huge difference since he's been on it.

WellThatsLife · 30/03/2015 21:07

Waiting on ooh to phone us back, dd has had the lergy that's doing the rounds but it didn't seem to be affecting her chest til this evening. Had 40mg pred + 10 ventolin at 6 but no improvement, her peak flow is low, coughing constantly and her chest is tight but her o2 is fine, it never seems to drop no matter how bad she is.

WellThatsLife · 30/03/2015 21:08

I'm debating wether to take her to a+e

Sirzy · 30/03/2015 21:11

If in doubt go to a and e. Hope she is ok

OP posts:
passthewineplz · 30/03/2015 21:24

Hope she's ok well, I agree if you're worried take her to A&E or call out of hours.

MmeMorrible · 30/03/2015 21:32

Agree with the others - if you're in doubt, take her to A&E to be on the safe side. In my experience, asthma is something the medics never mind you coming in with as it's just so unpredictable.

passthewineplz · 30/03/2015 21:33

Thanks for the advice re the preventor inhailers, she's been on inhailers since being 9 months old and honestly even with taking them daily for over 3 years they didn't make any difference at all to her cough. The consultant even said that they wouldn't make much difference, he thought I was nuts I'm sure as everytime they checked her chest and stats they were normal, yet she would be up all night barking - so that's why I think he prescribed likely asthma and discharged her from hospital follow up.

The cough comes back everytime she gets a cold, I'm the same. But I'll discuss with the asthma nurse if she's better off using them daily as a preventative measure

WellThatsLife · 31/03/2015 08:32

Went to a+e and she's got a chest infection so on amoxicillin, she wasn't admitted thankfully.

Sirzy · 31/03/2015 08:34

Hope she is feeling better soon

passthewineplz · 31/03/2015 11:02

Hope she's better soon, there's some nasty bugs going round at the moment x

WellThatsLife · 01/04/2015 13:09

Dd a lot better now, peak flow back to 80% of normal. Still coughing and chesty, 2 more days of steroids and 3 of antibiotics so we'll see what happens after that. Unfortunately we tend to find that once she's gone down once it seems to keep happening for a while

Sirzy · 01/04/2015 13:10

Glad she is on the mend, hopefully you can avoid any more problems for a while

PeppaIsACowbag · 02/04/2015 19:00

Hope your dd is better now wellthatslife.

Dd has just finished her second course of antibiotics in 2 weeks for chest infections. She's still sounding chesty, do you know that noise they make when they need a cough that builds up on every breath until they have a good cough would you call that a wheeze?

She sounds awful but she's not working her tummy muscles or anything and her sats her normal, think it might just be the infection going.

Sirzy · 09/04/2015 20:33

How is everyone coping with the pollen?

OP posts:
Misty9 · 10/04/2015 07:22

Hi all. I posted on a previous thread a while back about ds, 3.6, who has viral induced asthma. Well he's just had another chest infection and nurse at walk in centre said he's unlikely to get a preventer (lots of you were surprised he didn't already have one) as they try not to give them to young ones now. Great.

Anyway, my issue now is dd, nearly one, as she has a barking cough and is utterly miserable. Of course it's a bloody Friday so rather than wait it out, do I see the doc today? We've got banana medicine in the fridge at least! Really worried she might go the same route as ds... :(

Sirzy · 10/04/2015 07:24

Oh no misty hope they are ok.

I would push your GP for a preventer and if he won't then maybe ask for a refferal to a pediatrician?

OP posts:
Misty9 · 11/04/2015 08:49

Thanks. As I thought, dd is on banana medicine too now - and has her own blue inhaler and tiny mask. Unfortunately she isn't quite as willing to take either... :(
I've also got a doctors appt for ds to discuss his situation.

Does anyone else worry about the potential impact of frequent antibiotics on small bodies?

Sirzy · 11/04/2015 08:50

Have you let he play with the spacer? Hopefully she gets used to it quickly.

I did worry, but now he is on so much I have given up worrying too much on that front!

OP posts:
Maladicta · 12/04/2015 18:52

MrsMot under a Pratchett-inspired name!

We found covering the spacer with tons of stickers helped, as did a newly bought special toy which also needed an inhaler... Mr Mouse still accompanies ds everywhere at the age of 11...!

Peak flow can be a good indicator. It depends on what your child's asthma is like. Ds has a best pf of 350, at worst he can't manage 50. In a lot of dcs that would mean 999 but as it's something that happens regularly we know what to do.

Sirzy we're utterly crap with the pollen, ds has been struggling for 10 days. A three day course of pred did nothing so the gp's put him on a much higher dose which has to be tapered. Four days in of 80mg a day plus amoxycillin 3x a day we're finally seeing an improvement. He's still 100 down his pf.

We see the consultant next month for a routine appt, it's been his worst Winter for years and now he has allergic asthma as well as his viral-triggered we really don't know what to do next. He certainly can't take any more meds, he's on adult doses as it is. Sad

Can I also ask for a surreptitious hand-hold... Ds had an MRI on Friday. He's been having severe headaches since Christmas and has some 'blurring' round his optic nerves. The opthalmology consultant said she just wanted to rule things out but tbh it's just another bloody thing for ds to endure. We should get results in the next couple of days.

I'm just so fed up of the poor thing suffering. He can't play his sport because he's wheezing so much, he's missed tons of school, he can't play his beloved saxophone because he just hasn't got the puff Sad

He's starting puberty early, he missed out on a year's growth because of so many steroids when he was 3. They said he'd grow out of it probably by 9, instead he's actually getting worse.

He is the sweetest, kindest boy. I HATE asthma Angry

Apologies for the rant, I'm just so so so fed up Sad

Sirzy · 12/04/2015 18:56

Rant away. I started a thread in chat this morning ranting because I was so fed up.

They go through so much don't they. It's not fair. Hope the MRI is ok, could it be the high doses of meds causing the headaches?

OP posts:
Maladicta · 12/04/2015 19:10

It's the blurring of the optic nerve margins they're worried about, it's usually a sign of pressure in the brain. He also has tremors but we're can't tell if it's from the meds or something more systemic.

Grrr Sad

Sirzy · 12/04/2015 19:23

Worrying times, hope your not kept waiting for results too long
