Around 6 months ago, we noticed my 3 yr old was putting his nose right next to the book at bedtime so took him for an eyetest at the hospital, and were quite surprised that his vision is -10 in both eyes! He has been diligently wearing his glasses since, and has had one follow up test where they didn't change his prescription.

However, he still wants to get very close to things. Today I tried drawing some line pictures of simple objects to see how far he can see (obviously with his glasses on) - the further away he can recognise a 5cm square drawing is 2m. This doesn't seem normal to me... does anyone have any insight? Am happy to pay for him to see someone privately as I get the impression our local hospital is not all that familiar with severe myopia in children.

I'm an eye specialist.

I would ask your Gp to be referred to either an eye hospital, children's hospital or somewhere where they have more knowledge than your local district hospital.

-10 is quite unusual in small children, have they done any other tests, to look at reasons for the high myopia?

Helensburgh - thank you for your reply, I've sent you a private message.
