help - not sure if urgent or I'm paniking over nothing

so ds is 20weeks + 4days, he has been a bit sniffly recently, runny nose and cough but is also recovering from a bout of bronchitis.

But tonight he is really rattly! he's asleep in the bouncy chair but his breathing though steady and constant there's this overbearing rattle, now I know babies airways are small so a small amount of mucous can cause this but I'm not sure how worried I should be...am I being a bit too pfb? is there anything I can do to help him?? should I be on the phone to gp out of hours right now? I don't know..I must sound like a loon!!

he has no fever either I'll add.

No, I don't think you're going over the top, he is tiny. I would ring ooh in your situation.

Oh, I found a humidifier a real help when our dd had bronchiolitis at that age.

phoned gp had a phone consultation (never had one of them before) she said it's probably the cough hanging about, plus his cold, vapour rub him up, leave the calpol if no temp and clear his nose....7 years of fricking medical school for that!! the mind boggles.

I think I'll just sit here staring at him all night, not good when you have a 9-5:30 shift to work and need to be up at 6:30 to sort everything out and take him to his gm house. ohh well the joys of motherhood lol.

No, far from ideal, but it's so hard isn't it. Really hope he is less rattly tomorrow and that you get a bit of kip tonight.

Have you taken him out of his bouncy chair. ..forcing him to stay semi upright like that is tough on his tiny airways and possibly compromising his windpipe

put him in his cot on his back for 2 hours, then tilted to alternate sides every couple of hours

raise the top of the cot to a 15 degree angle

if he doesn't settle and sleep peacefully in an hour or so initially call the doc again

My DD has been admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties. The thing we have always been told to look for is the drawing in of the skin between the throat and the chest, or the skin above the cloak bones. In essence, if the effort of breathing is drawing the skin around the chest inwards, then they are working too hard to maintain their oxygen.

This is often worse when laying flat. So prop up, use vics, olbas oil etc. but if he is working too hard to breath, take him to A&E without delay.

morning all, I didn't keep him the bouncy chair all night, we co slept in the end he seemed better and more relaxed cuddled up to me. his breathing got better after a bit of a coughing for so he must have cleared a lot of the mucous, thanks for the help ladies.

he didn't wake too much either so that'd a bonus we had midnight, 3am 4am 5:30am and he's up now full of beans .
