leg pains/limping 8yo

mausmaus · 01/01/2015 15:14

my 8yo complains about leg pain (front of shin near ankle) for a few weeks now.

it's so bad they cry at night and have a limp especially in the morning of after sitting for a while.
no obvious bruising/no accident that I recall.

gp or minor injuries?

If no injury I'd take them to the GP, they can still arrange xrays etc if needed but you have an appointment rather than waiting for ages at minor injuries.

gamerchick · 01/01/2015 23:04

Either or.

Personally I would go to minor injuries but it's your call.

I probably would get it looked at ASAP though.

I'm glad you posted this - my 6 year old often complains about 'pins and needles', and tonight my 8 year old has been doing the same. I've wondered if they're growing pains?

They do seem very uncomfortable with it; in the past the 6 year old has cried because of it.

catsofa · 01/01/2015 23:10

"Pins and needles" is a circulation issue of some sort, there are many possible causes. I'd get that checked out I think if it keeps happening, persists for very long at a time or isn't caused by anything obvious like having sat on their own foot for a while.

badRoly · 01/01/2015 23:12

2 of my 4 dc have had this on and off over the years - we have always assumed they are growing pains.

The only thing we have found that helps is ibuprofen but usually they've only needed the normal dose at bedtime/when the pains start.

We never went to the GP though as our older nephew had the same before ours started with it.

badRoly · 01/01/2015 23:13

Just to clarify, mine had the pain in their shins (at either end of the shin bone) rather than the pubs and needles.

badRoly · 01/01/2015 23:14

Pins and needles. Sorry.

we had growing pains (dull, all-over pains) sometimes for a while. this is new and seems to only affect one leg.

Hope all goes well, when DS1 was 9 (he's 16 now) he complained of the same thing for weeks. As there was no history of injury and no obvious signs I assumed it was "growing pains". Took him for x-ray only to find that he had a thankfully benign but very large tumour/cyst in his shin bone and that there was hardly any bone left in his shin. Blush

He had an immediate op to remove it and the bone was grafted, and made a brilliant recovery, but I have learnt to listen when they complain of pain now.

Hope your DC is ok.

mausmaus · 02/01/2015 16:01

it's broken.
'only' a hairline fracture, but I feel a bit bad now for letting him limp for so long :(

but dc's eyes lit up when dr explained 'no baths with cast'
:o Shock :o

I'm glad you ignored my growing pains and took him to see a professional Grin!

catsofa · 02/01/2015 22:59

Oh wow, good call getting it checked out! Wishing him a speedy recovery.

dc still has leg pains...
control xray showed 'changes to the bones' of the ankle.
poor thing. some more fracture clinic apps and bloods and scans.
I wish drs were not so vague.

mousmous · 24/03/2015 09:55

shit. fracture clinic just called. dc is back on crutches until appointment...
