Sudden frequent weeing in 5YO boy

My 5YO boy in the last few days have started needing a wee very frequently. For example, he needed as we walked to the park today. Twenty minutes later, we we were leaving the park, he needed to go again. This is unusual for him, he usually is alright to hold his wee in for quite a few hours. No pain, I asked. He has been toilet trained in the day time for eons! But still not dry at night despite several attempts (if relevant!). Should I worry or when should I worry? Thanks!

Has he been drinking more fluids or different fluids to normal? Mine wee a lot if they have squash or juice rather than water.

Could be a urine infection.

pain isn't always present in early stages. trip to gp in order.

Urine infection most obvious but diabetes needs to be ruled out.

I thought a urine infection would be painful while weeing? I asked and he said no pain and hasn't complained about it. No excessive drinking either, he's always drunk quite a lot of water so unusual consumption there? My first thought was diabetes! But think maybe I am over thinking it as we recently (in October) gave up on a rather sustained campaign to get him dry at night... So maybe he became more aware? But this frequency is quite alarming!

Okay, will take him to docs ASAP... I hate wasting the doctor's time just wanted to check first if there is something I am missing...

No, no fruit shoots. When this first started, I tried to think if there was anything unusual in his consumption but no, as we were out that day and he had milk in the morning and then water but as we were out, he had less water, not more, hence the frequent trips to the toilet worried me... Thanks all.

First UTI I had was like pissing razor blades.

second however didn't. .or was weird. but I caught but really really early so it just felt like a constant need to pee and a bit tingly. no actual pain.

Would a doctor test for diabetes in a child so young? How is the test done? Any ideas?

P.S. I do know children are diagnosed with diabetes, I'm just in slight shock that it's even a possibility in my child???? First phone call tomorrow when the clinic is opened!

Take a sample of wee in a clean bottle: they will dip it for infection and the presence if sugar and ketones.

Signs of type one diabetes is increased drinking and increased weeing, lethargy and they can become quite unwell. The doc can easily test by testing urine sample for glucose and/ or a tiny fingerprick sample of blood and using that to do a blood glucose level which takes about 30 seconds.
If I were you I would try and catch first wee of the day in a clean ( if not sterile) container. You may have to provide another more sterile one but its a start.
Lots of kids have a symptomatic urine infections so may well be that. Let us know I will be following. Good luck x

Oh and type one diabetes in children has nothing to do with poor diet or eating too much sugar it's just an auto immune response which is pure bad luck. As I said though, hopefully it's just a urine infection!

Could he be constipated and have a very loaded bowel after Christmas excess? That can put pressure on the bladder and cause more frequent weeing.

Thanks a lot. I'm reeling slightly... It just came on all of a sudden... He has been asking for water but that's not unusual in the sense that he's always preferred water while his brother likes squash so often he will ask for water and reject squash. It's the frequent weeing that worries me. And he is looking quite flushed as well. He's just been unwell while spending a few days at his grandparents and he's always been very slight so I don't think he's lost weight recently though I can't be sure... I will try and call for an appointment tomorrow... He still has a nappy so I will try and get a bottle for when he goes for his first wee tomorrow morning. Thanks.

Okay, I've just gone and sterilised a small takeaway container and stuck it in the bathroom near their room so fingers crossed I will remember tomorrow. I will keep you all posted. Quite worried now as he was quite ill recently but so was his brother! Thanks.

Managed to get him seen this morning. Doctor checked the wee I collected and nothing showed up. She checked his kidneys (by feeling his tummy etc) and nothing. But she collected a clean sample to send off to get tested. Results on Friday. She said she is 50/50 as to whether he has an infection as sometimes they don't show in the initial dip test but will show in the hospital test. Thanks all for your support.

Just in case your GP does not find any evidence of UTI etc, I just wanted to mention my DS's experience. My DS started with frequent urination when he was 5, it just suddenly started and he had no other symptoms. Lots of trips to the doctors with samples that were clear, examinations that were normal but it was really affecting family life (trips in the car were a nightmare as DS worried about travelling a distance as he knew he would need the toilet). We were eventually referred to see a specialist at the hospital, an ultrasound scan was normal and then as suddenly as it started, it stopped. So, we never did find a cause for my DS's frequent urination. It is a couple of years ago now but I think it lasted 4 months in total.

If you google 'frequent urination in 5 year old boy', this problem does seem to be quite a common thing.
