What's in your first aid kit?

DD is 14mo and has eczema so we have the usual baby stuff (calpol, nurofen, snuffle baby, etc) and some eczema stuff (prescribed creams, non adhesive dressings and tapes, pirotin).

She's on her feet and running around and twice in last 24 h has fallen and her already eczema grazed chin has bled. I cleaned it with cotton wool and water and left it to scab over (lovely!)

I don't know if this was the right thing to do. We don't have anti sceptic - should we? What else do we need?

The only time I use antiseptic is if they've fallen somewhere manky. In the house I usually assume their own antibodies will deal with things.

I have antiseptic cream in my first aid kit plus plasters and some painkillers but that's all.

Warm salt water is a very effective antiseptic. It can be used on cuts ,as an eyewash and a mouthwash. It's very cheap and not likely to cause allergy.
I usually keep some steri strips in our first aid box for small cuts and a tube of arnica cream for bruises.
Olbas oil is good for colds and of course Calpol and Ibuprofen.

Saline water is great, just add salt to boiled water and leave to cool. We have antiseptic spray but don't often use it.

I bought steristrips online after I fell running and had an elbow injury that would have benefitted from some. We haven't used them yet but they are good to have.

Most useful are dressings in various sizes and plasters plus pain relief. We learned last year that's we need liquid antihistamine when out and about. Ds2 got bitten by horsefly when we were out walking and we had to turn tail to get him some medicine.

Seriously? A full portable first aid kit from St Johns Ambulance, cost about £45. If that's what's needed for reasonable background safely for a couple of relative strangers in the office with me, it's the least back-up I need to keep my kids alive. All babysitters are shown where it is. Plus dull over the counter pharmaceuticals for regular maladies.

Ditto for a St Johns Kit my family one cost £8 and has everything you are likely to need and is small enough to fit in my bag for trips to the park/ beach.

The only thing I have had to add to this is refill of plasters, antiseptic wipes, a tick/sting remover and a foil blanket, some sachet calpol and paracetamol for me.

Also if you are unsure how best to treat a graze I recommend you go on a first aid course, some areas offer parents with young children a baby and toddler one for free.

The grown-ups first aid also has diarrhea tablets, anti-histamin ointment, Lemsip, Solpadeine... I think that's it.
