5year old given inhaler

Went to the doctors with my dad as she has had a cough for 2 months and it had turned more chesty. Thought I'd check if there was an infection. She was prescribed an inhaler for suspected asthma (well he wasn't sure but said he can treat the cough in the same way to open up the airways). Its only for a 2week trial - anyone else been given an inhaler for their little one, for a cough?

Both of mine do over winter - from their 1st winter. Its pretty common. (Although not actually used it yet this year)

Yes all 3 of mine have had either inhaler for cough or nebulisers for chest infection. Doesn't necessarily mean your DC is asthmatic.

Oh really and are they diagnosed with asthma then? Couple people commented that they seem to prescribe them more nowadays than they used to. (Thanks for reply).

the can't diagnose for asthma until older than mine. not sure what age but I think it around preschool age.

I'm not necessarily expecting it.

Inhalers are often given as a course of treatment for symptoms without it meaning they are asthmatic. Which inhaler is it?

I took my DD to the doctor a few year's back as she had a persistent annoying cough, not chesty but a dry cough. She was older and they were able to diagnosed her with exercise induced asthma, she had to use both the brown and blue inhalers, through the winter, then they were gradually reduced and the cough did not come back. I think that the final conclusion was that it was just a persistent infection, it certainly hasn't come back.

It really helped him. We thought he might have asthma as dh does, but he has not really needed it since, except when coughing with/after a cold, when it really helps him.

dd has an asthma diagnosis and has only ever had coughing as a symptom. She has always retrospectively had coughs worse than dd2 (and other people) but you don't know what's normal with toddlers.

DS1 was prescribed one for a persistant cough when he was around 6yo.

It didn't help because it was a reflux cough.

Dd2 (2.10) has one, she doesn't wheeze during an attack she coughs, progressing to gasping in between coughing if severe. They don't diagnose with asthma until after 5 years old generally anyway. My nieces have both had an inhaler for persistent coughing with a virus in the winter months.

my 3yo dd has had an inhaler for 18months, generally only needs it during the winter when she suffers with persistent night time coughing.

Not a little one (obviously!) but I had 6 nebulisers and 2 inhalers fairly recently. Am not asthmatic, had chest infection that went to pneumonia, restricted air entry and wheeze. The neb helped when I coughed so muh I couldn't stop

Hi my wee girl was 3 when they gave her one and see trying to show her how to work it they said its because cough worse at night time it could be asthma cant test her till she is 6 but dont really get it giving they something that could make it worse!??
