Toe suddenly bending under

Ds(6) has been complaining that his toes hurt. On one foot his toes are bending under (middle 2) and crossing. This is a new thing.

His shoes are well fitted and his feet haven't grown.

Any ideas?

I have i idea but my dad's are like this due to arthritis (hope that's how you spell it)
