Chicken pox spreading on clothes

I have been knitting a hat for my friend's soon to be new born baby and DS has just got chicken pox! Is there any risk of it spreading through the knitting? Should I wash it before sending? I know it's not quite small pox, but don't want to send it if this is a risk.

Also, have read that all bedding should be washed (makes sense) does it have to be a hot wash? Just wondering if the virus lasts outside the body for any time...
cheers

Yes, it can spread through items DS has been in contact with - see www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Chickenpox/Pages/Prevention.aspx so do wash it first.

You need to wash bedding at 60 to kill the virus.
