Complaining that eye hurts

Occasionally over the past month DS has complained that his eye hurts. It seems to pass quickly. It never looks red or has any eye goo. He's 3 so trying to get him to let me have a look is difficult. Is he just getting random specks of dust or something? Any ideas? I am slightly paranoid but not sure if I should take him to doctor since there's I other symptoms.

Make an appointment with an optician - at 3 he is old enough as they can use pictures instead of letters and have the equipment to see into the back of the eye.
