2yr old not done a poo for a week.

2yrs 8 mths
normally regular, every evening does a poo dance and it comes though he doesn't like it.
He did a poo on Wed. Thursday he got poorly and has been unwell since, hardly eating but still drinking lots. diagnosed with tonsillitis yesterday and started antibiotics.
feeling much better but the poo situation is stressing him out, lots of bouts of crying that his bottom hurts and tummy hurts but he isn't even giving any involuntary pushes.
ds1 went through witholding, constipation etc and was medicated. He had to relearn all the bladder signals etc so it stresses me out a bit that we've had no poo for a week as i worry it might trigger withholding of it hurts to poo.

rightly or wrongly I've given him a sachet of paediatric movicol tonight. It is ok for his age, it is in date just left over from older dc. Can you get glycerin suppositories over the counter? i didn't manage to get back to the chemist before it closed today.

Yes it will be fine. Dd on movicol on and off from 1 year (just before second birthday) to now (just after 3rd birthday). Her constipation is a nightmare tbh. Good luck.

My son has had movicol since about 18 months or possibly younger. He has one sachet a day and often have to give a little more. I think it's unlikely that 1 sachet will have enough of an effect on its own - though will hopefully help. Regarding suppositories-I know you can get these over the counter in Ireland as bought them on holiday and think you can here too.

We managed to see the GP who said carry on with the movicol and we managed a poo after a lot of screaming in agony. Hasn't done one since though so keeping on 2 sachets a day at least until we get back to being regular.

With all good and respect to people who suggested the sachet. I hope it will work. But as mother - you need to be thinking what is causing him such a problem, so you will know and understand how to avoid it and prevent it. Please analyse his diet.

given that i have taken him to the gp and he has until this point been a once a day boy his current issue is due to being poorly, not eating, not drinking much when poorly though i offered lots and he is still bf, having a temp of 40 leading to dehydration. .... Shall i go on? He has been once which was very distressing for him but is resisting going again.

Sure it will be back to normal soon so long as we keep on the movicol to keep it comfortable for him.

Sorry to come over a bit arsey (ahem) but many of us 'suggesting the sachet' are at the same time trying to work out dietary triggers. Not just giving Movicol with an airy wave of the hand.

Nah echo, we just keep shoveling constipating crap down our children and then give the movicol to make up for it.

FGS in my OP it says he has always been regular, does ginger think I've radically altered his diet in the past week to make him be constipated?

Anyway the poor bairn is still on his antibiotic for tonsillitis and is on the movicol. Have had a teeny bowel movement today with lots of screaming but it was very soft so fingers crossed movicol doing its job. But the Dr phoned and the water sample we gave when we saw her with the tonsils has come back with growth so he is now on another set of antibiotic to sort that out and is being sent for kidney scans etc. My poor baby :(

Do you have any ideas about your dd's constipation (stupid question, you must have tried loads of things).

Ds1 used to suffer and was medicated. The after effects of being constipated for so long took ages to sort out and he was wetting and sometimes soiling well into year 1 of school, accidents slowly stopped during year 2. We never got the constipation under control even with medication until we went dairy free though. Once everything was under control we were able to slowly reintroduce it and he has it fine now.

Dd has never had problems with dairy but ds2 started getting constipated as soon as we introduced it with weaning so we stopped straight away before he got properly bunged up as we noticed the early symptoms and kept him dairy free. We have been slowly adding cooked dairy with no ill effects but obviously will cut that back again until we have this sorted.
