Unidentified rash - help please?

My DS2 is 20mo.

When he was born, he had various rashes which cleared up eventually.

Then at about a year old, he began getting bobbly skin at the top of his legs and arms. DH has keratosis pilaris, so we assumed it was this and mainly ignored it.

It got redder and spread so it is now covering most of his limbs but none elsewhere. Rather than just being bobbly, it is very red and almost looks like loads of little spots (much smaller than Molloscum). One thigh is particularly bad and absolutely covered.

We went to the doctor about four months ago and he said maybe eczema. We tried all the creams he gave us, but it has only worsened. We have changed our washing powder with no change etc too. We went back to the doctor a couple of weeks ago and he called in a colleague as he had never seen a rash like it. They said it seemed nearest to keratosis pilaris but that shouldn't be so red and spreading in this way.

They have given us more hydrating creams and hydrocortisone which are making no difference.

The rash doesn't seem to bother DS but it is massively unsightly. Wondered if anyone had any inspiration?

No ideas sorry but I would suggest you push the GP for referral to a dermatologist to get this looked at and treated.

Thanks Beautiful. The doctor says he will refer to a dermatologist but wants to wait and see for a bit longer.

That does look like keratosis pilaris to me but I am NOT medical. (I have always got it though, on my arms, and it does sometimes look as inflamed as your DS's.)

One of my DC also had it quite badly on his face for a while as a younger child.

For adults, I've heard it suggested to put the urea heel balm type cream on keratosis pilaris, but I would hesitate to try this with such a young child.

I would just push a bit more for the dermatologist referral, tbh. I hope you identify it, and can get it sorted soon.

Really Latin? DH's KP can look red sometimes but nothing as inflamed as this. We will definitely return to GP and ask for a referral.

Yes, mine did sometimes look that red. On hot days etc. I agree it's unusual though. Definitely think a prompt referral would be the way to go. I do hope you find a reason, and some treatment, soon.

Thanks. It seems still to be spreading onto his genitals and buttocks (poor child, no dignity on Mumsnet) so back to the doctor we go......

Hi Ruby, I'm bumping this because my DS has a very similar rash and I was wondering if you'd seen anyone yet. DS has had it mildly on belly and thighs for about ten days then the last few days it has spread to his arms and the rest of his legs and is a lot redder. Just starting on his back and one cheek now . Absolutely no other symptoms!

We saw the GP on Tuesday and he thinks it's a non-specific viral rash but it was still only on his belly then.

@RubyrooUK my daughter has KP, or what we think is KP. Did anything help with your sons skin??
