Desperate for advice. RE DS (6y/o)

One of DS molars is rotten. (only rotten tooth and because he banged it when younger).

When he visited the dentist 4 months back, they told us that the tooth will eventually need to come out when it started bothering him, but that they didn't want to touch it until then. Well, DS tooth is now really bothering him, particularly this weekend. Today he can't eat at all, I have given him Calpol but the pain is still there.

I am unsure about what to do? Do I take him to the hosp today or perhaps wait until tomorrow and phone our dentist? Will the removal of this tooth traumatise him? He is only 6.

Dentist tomorrow morning. My DD had a tooth out at the same age. They go to a specialist dentist and it wasn't at all traumatic. The staff are excellent and though the needles aren't great, if your boy isn't the sort to handle that they will put him out. They gave my DD some gas and air before anything happened and she was all floaty and didn't even remember it.

In the meantime go to the chemist and get some oil of cloves...tastes AWFUL but will help.

Also if your ds is alright with ibuprofen iris often better for dental pain than paracetamol.

Hospitals don't gave dental facilities and even emergency dentists won't remove teeth, so I would ring your dentist tomorrow. You can give ibuprofen and calpol together for pain.

If the pain is really bad might be worth giving him a dose of calpol during the night so the pain isn't awful then call your dentist first thing. Most dentists have emergency appointments available every day so should be able to see you almost straight away. Remember to keep yourself relaxed tomorrow and hopefully your DS will be relaxed and it'll be out before you know it! May need regular brufen and calpol tomorrow too. Hope it goes OK
