First UTI in 5 year old DD (not ecoli...) help!

DD has just had her first UTI. I already feel like her treatment has been mismanaged.

She was offered 3 days trimethroprim which seemed to clear it. But on dipping, there was still trace blood a week later. I was told to come back in 7 days. That didnt sound great to me so I kept dipping her urine myself and within another day, it was positive for white blood cells and blood so saw another GP. This time 7 days trimethroprim.

She has just started school, and I really don't think she is drinking enough; she has also just developed constipation (literally at the same time as the UTI).

She is well enough in herself but I hate seeing her in pain so pestered the GP about sorting out her constipation at the same time (as I know they can be linked).

But there is no talk of sending her for a scan to double check her kidneys. Also, I understand that the proteus bug causing her infection. Is more unusual which also leaves me feeling a bit .

Grateful for any further tips from wise mumsnetters! I am giving her dmannose but I think it only works properly for ecoli bugs.

My dd had the same when she started school. She would go all day without drinking and even though I had asked her teacher to remind her some days they were too busy and forgot.

We then got into a routine of having a really big drink before school and another as soon as she got home. Also, after the second UTI the penny dropped and she did get better at drinking during the day.

The issue is she in after school club some days. So it's hard for me to get the staff to nag her to drink (and she really needs nagging)

I'm not a fan of diluting juice but I wonder if it makes water more palatable? Do you give just water or juice as well? Thanks - appreciate your input!

Does she have underlying health problems? UTIs are not uncommon in girls especially - I wouldn't have thought it warranted a kidney scan.

Dd1 was sent to see the consultant after her second confirmed UTI and then referred from there to have a renal scan. I think they said that was standard practise.

Nope - no underlying problems, other than usual childhood things like glue ear.

I think what has thrown me is that firstly it's a weird "unusual" bug for a young girl to get, (not ecoli) and also that she was peeing pink blood so it seemed to affect her badly (even though she was well in herself).

She was born with a minor heart complaint which she has outgrown but that, combined with the fact I have a tendency to health anxiety, means I ALWAYS worry about her

They only send for scans after 1 uti if the child is under 5 , if she gets another one they will prob scan. They can get utis from loads of different germs and don't seem to treat differently (scan wise, not medication wise) . My dd had a uti from the morganella morganais germ, no one in the hospital had heard of it, it comes from tropical islands apparently, so no idea where she picked that up from :/

The antibiotics are causing bad constipation so hoping that clears up soon!

Maybe I'm overreacting. I guess it just feels like a horrible thing for a 5 year old to get.

This is the recommended scanning schedule for children > 3 years old. So no scan til 2 proven infections.

The most common reason for UTIs in girls is constipation/ being fecally impacted. It is really important that she drinks a lot to make sure the constipation issues don't continue otherwise it can then lead on to a whole load of other issues (encopresis, enuresis). There are vibrating watches which you can buy which you can set with up to 8 alarms (it can be set to vibrate so as not to annoy everyone else) and can be a good reminder to drink water whenever it goes off.

Thanks. She wasn't constipated until she took the antiobiotics. But I need to keep an eye on it as she isn't drinking enough...

The infection seems to have cleared but there is lingering trace blood in her urine so we are being referred on Monday if not cleared up.
