What Aspects of Dental Health would you like your child to be Educated about?

Hi all,
I am an aspiring dental student and I am currently in the process of planning a lesson in which I will teach year 2 children about oral hygiene. What I'd love to know is, what, as a parent, you think your child needs to be educated about in order to reduce trips to the dentist and maintain a healthy mouth. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Flossing - it just doesn't seem to be explained enough - I am in my 50s and have bad teeth and gums probably due to not looking after my gums properly - I have always had regular check ups etc and dentists always say 'don't forget to floss' but no one ever takes the time to properly show you how to do it - still not sure I do it right Blush.

Thanks for your swift response,
This link www.colgate.com/app/CP/US/EN/OC/Information/Articles/Oral-and-Dental-Health-Basics/Oral-Hygiene/Brushing-and-Flossing/article/How-to-Floss.cvsp is the flossing advise from the colgate website BUT...
From my experience, the general advise is about breaking any plaque connections between surfaces of the teeth. One up and down motion should suffice. If floss doesn't work for you, try TE-PE brushes, which I find to do the same job as floss but is more user friendly :) Thanks again for the first response.

Mine needs to be reminded to do all surfaces thoroughly each time. They can be so slap dash about it.

Also mine were amazed that apparently healthy food can be so bad for teeth - very sweet fruit etc.

I think they need to be reminded that it's best to drink water also. Mine do, but a friend who came over was gobsmacked that we didn't have coke.
