Infected foot

My 2 yo DD was in hospital last week and she had a cannula in her foot. I noticed it was hurting her alot and her foot was really red so I asked a nurse to take a look, she said it was fine and left it in place. The next day we were discharged and they went to take the cannula out only to find it was half in, half out and her foot looked really sore but they said it would be fine and we went home.

Fast forward a week it is now infected. There is a big lump of pus and the whole foot is red and swollen. She is now unable to walk on it. I tried to get an appt with a dr but could only get a telephone one and he's just prescribed her penicillin.

Will this be enough to treat it? Should I try and get the pus out myself or let it pop on it's own? And do I cover it with a dressing or is it best left to air?

T.I.A :)
